First off: My son Harry (9 yo) has been having a blast seeing 'old' movies that i really enjoyed when they originally came out. Most have been mid 80's and 90's flicks, like Back to the Future (all three) Jurasic Park (all three!) Bill and Ted's excellent Adventure (not nearly as entertaining some 26 years later, sadly ...) The Mummy, Original Star Wars, ToS Trek movies, Independence Day, all the Indianna Jones movies, Stand by Me, Fifth Element etc. Oh, just remembered: Ghost Busters and Spiderman. Please don't recc the Batman movies. I hated them all with a passion. ;)

Anyhoo, any suggestions? He tends to like ones with action. (duh! he's a boy!) while his brother prefers humour. My only limits are ... not TOO much graphic violence/sex/drugs. Swears are fine. The type of violent but not TOO violent flicks above are fine. (gotta say, the Mummy was pretty damn violent. More than I recall.)

He wants to see Die Hard, but I"m thinking it's too violent. Of course, I thought Bill and Ted had drug use in it, but the staff at Blockbuster assured me it didn't, and they were right! funny how we (mis)remember stuff eh?.

SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED. Today, we're going to pick up Teen Wolf. :D Man, I had such a thing for Micheal J Fox. (and I still do!)

Thing two: After getting my brain around the beadwork thing, I really want to try something bigger. Any suggestions/ideas about things I could get that come in an array of colours, that don't cost too much? I've seen things done with spools of thread that are cool, but thread is like, $2-3 bucks per spool. If this art 'instillation' has 100 to 1500 'pixels' I just couldn't afford that AT ALL.

Paint samples is the only other thing I can think of where you get an entrie spectrum of colour, but I'm positive there's lots more out there.

THANKS IN ADVANCE MY LOVELY FLISTIES!! <3

I bought a Sulky collection at the Machine Quilters Showcase a couple of years ago (it's now MIA, damnit). The price was about half of retail and would be PERFECT for what you're talking about with multiple colors. I would suggest checking for a quilt / craft event near you (if you let me know your general location I can check it out for you). Here is the Sulky website with a list of their collections and retail prices (don't faint).

http://www.sulky.com/slimline/index_slimline.php

I got the "metalic dream collection" on the last day of MQS for like $100, when retail is $340 (gah!)

If nothing else, my step-mom goes to MQS every year - next year I could ask her to pick on up for you...

Ladyhawke, Willow (with Warwick Davis), Ferris Bueller's Day Off maybe, for the brother who likes humor. I'd recommend Braveheart and The Crow as well, but those are probably too violent. Maybe Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves?

Oh, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure...the film that started my lifelong crush with Keanu Reeves!

The Crow is pretty violent, but it's one of my favourites. Not appropriate for a 9yo though.

You could go back a decade further and hit up the 70's for all the big cheesy Disaster Films that were popular then: The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, Asteroid, etc. Oh, and Jaws! And being from the 70's, they tend to be less violent and more about just blowing things up. :D Except for Jaws, of course. :D

Also, you could hit up Time Bandits, if you can find it! Tron (the original), Spaceballs, Flash Gordon (The really cheesy one with the soundtrack by Queen!), Gremlins, E.T., Superman (with Christopher Reeve), and I'm sure i"ll think of some more later on today.

Ah yes, Real Genius, Encino Man (the humour age level is right about a 10yo :D), He-Man (the movie w/Dolf Lundgren- not the cartoon), and my daughter's favourite: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original movie, not the cartoons or the remake).

the mighty ducks? I got really into that one when I was a kid.
the goonies? though i never actually saw that one.

sorry, you've named most of the movies I might have thought of, and everything else is either 'girly' or inappropriate.

what about getting a larger craft punch, in a circle or square, and using it on paper to make larger pieces?
I'd suggest checking out the oriental trading company's website for ideas- there's a tone of multi-colored, cheap things there.

Paper napkins? I saw an installation piece once that was napkins decopaged to plexi-glass and lit from behind for a stained-glass effect.

Second the Turtles, how about The Princess Bride, the Crocodile Dundees, the Airplane! Series and the Beverly Hills Cop movies? How about the Conan series, stuff like WarGames, Legend, Goonies, Karate Kid(s) and the Last Starfighter.

The Goonies and Neverending Story were the first two to come to mind. Also, Willow. And there's always my favorite guilty pleasure, Space Camp. :-P Definitely seconding the Airplane movies. Even without adventure, they're hilarious and the sexual innuendo tends go to right over the kids' heads.

Like you, I loved anything with Michael J. Fox-- Oh, and the old Karate Kid movies, and The Goonies (Riley's watched it many times), The Princess Bride, Labyrinth, Space Camp

OHHHHH!!!! How did I forget about the Neverending Story? I loved that movie.

I think Lady Hawke would be too slow for him. (and too romantic *barf!!*) :D

We just watched Terminator, and he was horrified and bored with the like ... 2 min romance scene. :D

Have yours seen Back to the Future? I enjoyed that one just as much 23 years later!

Something like that would be great, but I often need multiples of the same colour. One piece might take 100 or more spools, and there'd be lots of repeats.

See? I loved Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I mean, I KNOW it was spectacularly shitty, but OMG ALAN RICKMAN was so fantastic in it! It was my first AR love! They saw the first two minutes and decided they hated it. *shrug*

I've never seen Willow, but they might like it! And yeah, Ferris Bueller is on tv every week or so. :D Thanks!

I think the 70s movies would be too slow and cheesy. (got knows they are for me!) But your suggestion made me think of ... oh shit, I forget what it's called, but the Ben Affleck Asteroid movie. He'd eat that one right up.

I've never seen the Crow, but heard lots about it. Yeah, DEF too old for my boys at this point. :D Oh man, I loved Time Bandits! I think Gremlins would probably be a hit with them as well. Thanks!

Oh yes! I was a bit old for TMNT when it came out, but it would probably be right up his alley.

Quincey would probably love the Mighty Ducks. He's a big hockey fan. I never saw Goonies either, but when it was on tv the other day, he wasn't interested in watching it. *shrug* You can lead a horse to water and all that. :D

I'd thought about the craft punch. (on paint chips!!) but I"m not sure what to put them on. I also thought of using actual glass. i used to do stained glass, and would like to get into it again, but not in a pixel format. Perhaps a mosaic. it's just that it would be VERY heavy when finished!

I will check out that website. thanks!

I don't think he'd enjoy the Princess Bride (too dry) but he's surprised me before, so who knows? God knows *I* love it! I think you totally hit the nail on the head with Crocodile dundee. That one would be just about perfect. :D Thanks!

Ooh! I loved Space Camp! I don't remotely remember what happens in it, but I DO remember loving it! (obviously, they go to space by mistake, but aside from that I have no idea. :D)

Thanks!

A lot of people have suggested Princess Bride, but i really think he'll find it too dry. I think it's hilarious, but i guess I'll have to try and see!

Sadly, they didn't have Teen Wolf at the rental place, so we got X Men Wolverine. (never seen it, and I honestly don't care to ...) Terminator, which goes a bit over the 'mild' violence thing, but GOD I LOVED THAT MOVIE WHEN IT CAME OUT! And Uncle Buck. I seriously laugh when I just THINK about that one. :D

Date: 2011-10-16 10:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] luvscharlie.livejournal.com
You know I'm pretty sure it was the *sigh*Wesley*sigh* factor that took my cousin and I back to that movie over and over again, so yeah, it may be a little dry for him.

I did love Spaceballs (though the suggestiveness is a bit less than subtle-- which I really had forgotten until I watched it again recently with Riley and was like "Stop asking questions you're too young for me to answer and watch the darn movie!" But if he likes John Candy in Uncle Buck, Spaceballs is my favorite Candy movie. He's a wonderful Mog.

Most that came to mind have been mentioned already - but how about Short Circuit? Also Dragonslayer, Condorman, and Something Wicked This Way Comes is good, but spooky. Would they like something like White Fang? Holes would be good, too, I think.

Robocop might be too violent, but it's sort of video-game violence. I seem to recall likeing The Beastmaster when I was like... 12... but in hindsight, it was crap acting. But hey - why worry about acting when there are FERRETS?!

Holes! OMG I loved that movie, and I think he would too! Aside from short circut and Robocop, I haven't seen most of the ones you listed.

I don't think robocop is any more violent than most of the stuff that *I* listed.

Thanks!!

ohh, stained glass. I've always wanted to learn to work with glass, in any capacity.

you're right about the mosaic heaviness of course.

What about ribbon? you could use strips of ribbon to collage a piece, or use a smaller ribbon hook-rug style or looped onto plastic canvas. obv. detail would be sacrificed in that second option.
what else... bouncing balls, plastic eggs, colored straws, brads. If you guys drink anything canned regularly, you could cut open the cans for tin panels to paint and use, but the sharp edges would be an issue.

oh - Batteries not included! that was a great movie. It might be a little slow for them to appreciate, it's more comedy than action, but I enjoyed it at their age/s.

For the humor one, some Mel Brooks might be good. Spaceballs was a favorite of mine, and they both would probably enjoy making the connections of who's being made fun of. (Just give them some warning/explanation about the Alien parody near the end. It starts off gross/scary but vaults right into silly.)

Men in Black might be another good blend of humor/action.

MST3K/Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Upon asking Mr. L: Real Genius, Space Camp, Masters of the Universe (live action), TMNT (any), Jumanji, Who Framed Roger Rabbit [My comment, it might be a little slow, but it's excellent], Yours Mine and Ours (original!), Teen Wolf, The Flash Movie (maybe... He thinks it might not hold up years later).

We tried to rent Teen Wolf yesterday, and they don't stock it! *sad face*

And yes! I forgot to list MIB, but Harry LOVED those. I don't think they'd be grossed out by the Alien parody.

I don't know if MST3K would be too mature for them or not. God knows I"m a huge fan of it though.

and yes, I saw that article, thanks! I don't think anyone in the world was surprised, really. Actually, *I* might have been surprised, if not for all of the conjecture swirling around the interwebs. My gaydar did not ping at all around him, but then again, I didn't watch Heros or ... the other show he was on. My only knowledge of him was from the Trek movie.
