Sad Week at the Funster Farm :(

tripperfunsterObviously, the more animals that you own, the more animals that you own will die. This was not a good week for us.
First Bella, our Nigerian Dwarf goat died.
This wasn't exactly a shock, as she was getting up there in age, but it's still sad to lose such a sweet little girl.
Then yesterday, I went to feed the animals (as always) and my piggie Hogrid was pretty much dead. He'd been fine the day before. He ate like usual, took some dog treats from me, got some scratches, etc, but the next day he basically unconcious and unresponsive. In fact, he was so far gone that i didn't even call the vet, as I'm quite positive there was nothing that could be done.
Here he is as an OMG cute little baby! He gave me NO END of trouble when I first got him, and he refused to eat! He wasn't underaged or anything, but he was still with his mum, so I guess he was still suckling, and I jumped through so many hoops to get him eating on his own. Eventually it was sweet potatoes that won him over to solid food. ;)
This is him a few years later. As you can tell, once he took to eating, there was NO GOING BACK! :D Harry is actually holding a crab apple for him.
I'll miss you Hogrid. I hope there's lots of clover and apples where you are now.

Date: 2012-02-29 06:13 pm (UTC)Last summer I had to put one of my horses down. It was so hard, but it was the best for him. He'd been having a few health problems for the last couple of years, and this last summer was just too much. He had COPD, which was always exacerbated by our hot, southern US summers, and which caused him to not eat much... which caused weight loss (when he was always a hard keeper to begin with)... and the subsequent issues that came from that. He stayed on steroids for most of the summer, and then he'd come off when the weather cooled off and he could breathe.
He would gain back the weight over the winter, and then we'd start all over again. This past year, he just wasn't gaining it back, and one day we couldn't get him to stand back up. We tried everything...but when he had lain there for two days (with us physically turning him onto his other side every few hours so he woudldn't collapse a lung or get a sore, and using a syringe to get water down him) I knew that was it. The vet came the next day and put him down. He's buried in the pasture next to our house.
He's the second animal I've ever cried over in my life (and we've had a ton of fuzzy friends over the years). He was 30 when he passed away (pretty old for a horse). We'd been together for 20 years... since I was nine years old. It was really, really sad, and I still miss him. :(

Date: 2012-03-02 03:43 pm (UTC)I have a horse (Spock) who is almost blind, and also painfully skinny. We've only had him a couple of years, but he was sooo thin when we got him, and we've been working really hard to get some weight on him.
He doesn't have the lung problems though, so that's a good thing. I'm so sorry about your horse.
