You asked if colored pencils could blend well. They can if you slowly build them up over layers- they can produce some amazingly deep colors. They also have blending markers you can use that help out (or just use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol) with evening out tones and such. My favorite color pencil brand is prismacolor, but they can be pretty expensive. Maybe try the brand that was mentioned above, and if they work well and you like colored pencils, upgrade later to artsy-fartsy colored pencils. lol
