VIDEO. Create a magnificent piece of GISHWHES or Elopus-related art and have it displayed in a gallery art show. The Elopus is Gishwhes' mascot this year. Each year they have some odd smush animal as their mascot. A crow/rat, a wolf/rooster (Wooster) and the Elephant/Octopus, Elopus.

I found a crappy, cheap but fairly realistic octopus toy at Value Village, then used Model Magic clay to shape it's head into an elephant, plus gave it a tentacle trunk and covered all of the other tentacles to look the same. A little acrylic paint and voila! An Elopus!


I printed out a little 'name tag' thing for him, then took him to the Winnipeg Art gallery. They were lovely, and helpful, getting a pedestal for him, and making sure he looked just right before filming. So nice to get an immediate and enthusiastic yes for a change!

I love how that second woman looks, then looks again, then gets right in close as if she wan't quite believe her eyes... Your Elopus is beautifully painted! We tried this one in the Tate Modern with a team member in her magnificent costume for the "GISHWHES makes me feel..." item. I'm not sure if they will give it all the points as it wasn't actually a gallery show she was displayed in...

I think the judges are pretty picky about details. Last year we figured we would earn x amount of points, if we just got face value for our submissions. (not counting bonus points) We ended up getting quite a bit less than that!

They are pretty strict. That doesn't mean you won't make the coffee table book and/or the hall of fame, though. If you're not in the running to win, the coffee table book is the next best thing!
