Still playing with the medium. I bought a new knife today from Lee Valley, then promptly broke the tip off! I didn't buy any replacement blades, since I didn't know if I'd like it or not. I do.

Here's Misha with a Kale background, and then just a simple black one. This was white cut paper, instead black, like last time.

You got his expression exactly : D
That sucks about the blade - isn't it always the way?

Nah, he's got enough crazy stalker fangirls bothering him, I'm sure.

Well, I can't take credit for the expression, as I used a highly manipulated photo for the template.
As for the blade, I really should have bought replacements, but I didn't want to waste my money if I didn't like it. The guy said it was much finer and more precise than an ex-acto knife, and I didn't really believe him. ;) (it's a BIT more fine but I wouldn't go so far as to say MUCH finer.) But regardless, they dull pretty quick when you're cutting through two layers of paper and a cutting pad!

that's my problem with paper cutting (the layers) -- I press so hard to get through the paper that my hand shakes, if I press lighter, then I either lose control, or it doesn't cut. *shrugs*

Hee! It's not actual Kale, just a blown up photo of kale that I printed off the inter webs.
And yes, I'm quite sure he'd approve! :D

I"ve also been using a thicker 'art' paper (bristol) than just regular paper. Which needs even MOAR pressure. Then, I have to go back and basically re-cut all the shit I didn't cut the first time around.

Of course, I"m still a n00b, so I might improve in that department, or I might not!

Oh wow, how are you cutting this so clean? What kind of knife, what kind of paper?

I don't think I have the patience to even try, but am still curious.

Hey, if you can power through a first blade, you can paper cut! It's actually pretty quick.

I've bought a couple of different blades, (all cheap) just to try them out. For this one I used a Techni-edge. Basically an exact-o knife, but it's a bit thinner blade and a wee bit longer and pointier.

I have a little swirly blade that works nicely on feathers, but the paper really catches the blade and I find that I have better control with a straighter knife.

As for paper, these were done on Canson Bristol 100lb. I just happened to have a bunch because that's what I like to draw on. It's a nice, thick art paper, basically. I'm sure regular paper would work too, but this holds it's shape better.

Also, these are kind of big 8x10 ish, so there aren't a ton of teeny-tiny details really.

You'd be surprised, dexterity and precision are not my things. However, I'm really good at cutting my fingers...
I don't use an xacto knife because I always end up trying to hold it lower for more control and that tends to end badly.

I'm going to at least look up those knives though, because I've never heard of them and I want to see.

And now you've made more, damn you're impressive!

Unrelated, I've been wondering for a long time, who's the guy in your icon? Because I need to stop thinking of you as "the person with the Nathan icon" unless that's actually who it is.

Nathan who? Fillion? Nope. That's a picture of me and Snape that a friend drew for me years ago. I once had someone complain that I had an 'obviously naked Snape with a young girl'. Hee! He's definitely naked, but I am not a young girl! ;)

I got the knife at Lee Valley, btw, if you're looking. It has a nice, rubberized handle, so you might find that your grip is just fine without actually holding the cutting part. ;)
