I have gotten it into my head that I should learn to play the guitar.
Forty years is much too long to have not played it properly. (especially considering that I HAVE LIVED WITH/PLAYED WITH/SLEPT WITH/BEEN MARRIED TO musicians for most of my adult life. Honestly! What the fuck was I doing with my 23 hour days when I was on the road with my bands? oh yeah, drinking and getting high...
But still! What the fuck did I do with my twenties? I honestly cannot fathom having so much spare time and doing so little with it! I didn't even draw back then! WE DIDN'T HAVE THE INTERNET BACK THEN!
But I digress ...
I've taken one guitar lesson so far, and it went better than expected. Don't get me wrong, I suck horribly at it. These fat littlehooves hands have become fairly adept at holding a pencil, but framing guitar chords is a very different animal. And my poor fingertips are all poofy and swollen (and sore AND numb .. dont' ask me how that works).
Also, while searching for songs to lean, I have accumulated quite a crush on Dave Grohl
Fear not, I have never, nor will I ever be into the bandom scene (see above for my rl experiences with musicians) but that doesn't mean that I can't drool now and again.
Any suggestions on songs I should learn? No. Not stairway to heaven.
I am currently working on Highway to Hell and Sorry, so that I can accompany Quincey's R&R vocals, and I'm also working on Times Like These (foo fighters, see crush above), and Lola, 'cause that's a great acoustic song.

But I wish I could learn to play Lola, too.

Date: 2008-05-19 02:56 pm (UTC)Of course, they have lots of great songs, and they were trail blazers, bla bla bla, but I'm kind of sick of them. Ditto for Pink Floyd and Zepplin.
I was trying to figure out why I liked Lola so much, and duh! It is THE slashiest song in rock music evah!
Do you play any instruments? I took a couple of years of clarinet lessons, but stopped when I got pregnant. (not enough air to both breathe AND play. ) Other than that, I just relied on my voice and good looks to get by. *g*
Needless to say, I only have my voice now. :D

Date: 2008-05-19 03:00 pm (UTC)I took piano and guitar and voice lessons, and as a result I can sort of read music. That's about it! I have been paid to sing, and I've never been paid not to sing, so I think that's a good sign that I also have a pretty voice. In high school I used to strum my guitar with the simplest chords and the least complex strum, and sing really loud.

Date: 2008-05-20 12:35 am (UTC)I would say start with some early Beatles stuff because it's simple and mainly the same few chords in different combinations (of course their later stuff gets more difficult). Really, "Day Tripper" is a really REALLY easy song to learn.
As well, I've found that "Take it Easy" by the Eagles and Coldplay's "Yellow" were good songs. And it can't hurt to just learn some jazz chords and riffs because their easy and fun.

Date: 2008-05-20 02:08 am (UTC)Most of the Beatles early stuff should be fairly easy, but as I said ... meh. Maybe some Black Crowes instead.

Date: 2008-05-22 01:11 am (UTC)I took a semester in HS [at the school], but then... yeah, sex and the occasional achievement of high seemed to take over my life, lol. (along with the ever-present fiction reading)
I've tried to pick it up here and there.
"Knocking on heaven's door" is a nice 3 chord song. :P I was inspired by GnR of course.
Dave Grohl is teh hot! :D

They were at their peak when I was in 6th-9th grade, and hence I was quite rather all about them. and George Michael. Heh.
"goodbye blue sky" is a reasonably easy Floyd song as I recall.
