Okay, it's kitchen cupboards, but heh, made you look!

Our kitchen is pretty big, and FUCKIN' UGLY! It was made in 1973 and aside from the linolem, it has not been upgraded since. (well, we bought a dishwasher..)

We moved in here four years ago, and I have been dying to get the kitchen re-done the whole time. I was just waiting for enough $$$ for new cabinets. Fast forward four years...no cash, so I decided to roll up my sleeves and paint them myself.

Did I mention that I HATE painting??? elventy11!!

Anyhoo, the before:

I'm sure they were pritty 35 years ago, but the dark wood and tacky pseudo-gothic handles are just hideous now. And, of course, because of their age and the finish on them, I had to sand them, wipe them, prime them and then add two TWO coats of paint.

The after:

None of the new handles match, because we're trying to decide which one we like the best.
Now I just have the REST of the kitchen to do. This is only about a THIRD of it. *sigh*

Geez, check out the world's grossest range hood, stolen directly off of a 70s pirate ship!
*dies from the ugly* (and the mess)

Now, some nice (fake) dark granite countertops and lose the fugly striped wall paper, and we'll be done!

I'll post more of this WIP *snerk* as it happens. :D

Awesome! So organized, and the white makes it very bright.

I want new cabinets in my relatively small, messy, dirty, rented kitchen. *pouts*

So much prettier! Interesting that they installed the door handles in the center of the doors.

I actually like to paint walls, and I have managed to paint every room in our house except our bedroom in the four years we have lived in this house. We just had two rooms in our basement finished. The previous owner had put up sheetrock, but hadn't done the mudding and taping, and there was no ceiling. I'm trying to get the walls done ( over 700 sq. feet of floor space) so that we can have carpeting installed. Then we can put all the toys downstairs, and take over the playroom as a work area, since the hubby works at home two days per week, and we are both in school.

Good luck with the painting! :)

Wow, what a difference. Go you!

What's that blobby painty mess on teh countertop? Is that you testing colors or something? Or is it a masterpiece I've just completely insulted? :P

Wow great job! I can totally sympathize with you, our house was built in 1972. They redid the bottom cabinets before we moved in but not the top. Gag. I need to get inspired by yours and do something with my horrible ones

p.s. the 70s pirate ship comment made me spit out my tea laughing

WOW! Great Job! I'd like to vote for the handle 2nd from the left. Simple and understated has the best chance of lasting and having the most resale value. Though I admit 2nd from the right is more interesting, but it looks like it could be dangerous!

My God but you have a wonderfully big kitchen. To me anyway. Ours is like..a strip of floor with the basics.

I really like the white. It makes the yellow-puce counter top a little more bearable, too, though dark granite would love lovely.

Ooh, that's exactly what my mom & I have been dying to do in our kitchen since we moved in years ago! Now I'm really itching to go paint shopping. :3

Organized? Dear lord, woman, that doesn't say much about you! :D

The counter is only clear, because I was PAINTING over it. Honestly, we probably shouldn't bother replacing the countertop because we never actually see it. :D

Lots of rentals will let you paint, as long as it's neutral.

Yes, the handle placement boggles the mind. I would love to move them, but filling the holes and drilling new ones was not a task I was willing to take on.

I hate painting, but I did the boy's rooms (I should post pics, they're quite cute, with planets and glowing stars and such) plus our bedroom.

Note to self...NEVER PAINT ANYTHING RED EVER AGAIN. I think it took 6 coats and it still isn't quite right.

Are you talking about the blue blobby thing? That is Quincey's tissue paper/stained glass thing he made during his visit to Kindergarden, as an intro for next year.

We actually have a wall of art for the kids. I should post a pic of it.

:D But really, it looks like a rejected treasure chest! (but greasier).

I took the TSP to it this afternoon, in prep for painting. And yes, you should paint. No sense in me being the ONLY one suffering this weekend! :D

Thanks! It's actually sort of an off-white ivory, but looks pretty stark white in the pics.

It is massive! Not that I'm complaining, but it's a bit daunting to paint the whole thing!

Hee! That is actually the handle that we chose! The second from the right was nice, but the wrong colour. Sort of bronzy.

Oh god, I could never paint for a living. The first three letters in paint are PAIN!

coincidence? I think not.

Yeah, and I'm lazy. I'd much rather draw smut than paint cabinets. Who wouldn't? :D

Lucky for us, the counter is usually so cluttered that you never actually see it. :D

My mom just told me that dark counter tops show the dirt more. oh well, I've never taken her advice before, why would I start now?

We painted the kids' playroom red, and I was just noticing yesterday that there are areas where the color still doesn't have complete coverage. I think I gave up after three coats!

Yes, you should post some pics of the boy's rooms! I totally fail at being able to paint anything other than plain walls. :)

I love red, but I'll pay someone else to do it next time!

The boy's rooms were done BEFORE I decided to take up art, so they're not great. Way cooler than any room *I* had as a kid, mind you, but not exactly extreme Makeover cool, if you KWIM. :D

How do you keep the kids out of it? Well mine is only 3 and she's into every fucking thing. I cringe when I think about trying to paint something that big and keep her out of it. Haha.
