Moar Trek Art
Jan. 5th, 2010 11:27 amYay, Yultart is done! Wow, that was a metric fuck-ton of art, over a month's time, and according to the mods, we had a 99% submission rate. How amazing is that?
Anyhoo, I did Kirk/Bones for
scatter_muse who requested them in a Myst-like setting.

Click on it to get extreme peen details.
I really struggled with this pic, since it's 90% background, and I don't ROLL THAT WAY. Not to mention it's watercolours, which I'm still pretty damn new at. You have to 'mask off' the areas that you don't want to get paint on, for each layer that you paint, so this had ... six or seven different masking layers. My poor brain! it was hard to figure out what to paint first, and what needed masking first.
I like to draw big, to get lots of detail, so I went out and bought an 18"x24" watercolour pad, just for this. HUGE MOFO IS HUGE! Two feet across and one and a half feet high!!

Date: 2010-01-05 05:52 pm (UTC)I don't think you'd like shopping with me. Or maybe you would. I get all gooey and moony and dreamy about different pens, and brushes and papers and stuff. I just wander around fondling the merchandise. ;p

Date: 2010-01-05 06:51 pm (UTC)Also, are they wearing their boots still, or black socks? Have they gone old-man on me?!
I love this. SO MUCH! It's just awesome. I want to call it Captain Kirk and the planet of the phallic objects...

Date: 2010-01-05 07:03 pm (UTC)The men stand around 10 inches tall, and would be another inch or so, but I ran out of room to finish their feet.
Those a boots ,btw, NOT BLACK SOCKS! If I was going 'old man' I totes would have drawn the sock garters, you know that!
Kirk measures in at exactly one inch, and Bones is a bit longer at 1.2 inches. THAT'S WHY THEY CALL HIM BONES!
Let's call it PLANET PHALLAXIA, SHALL WE?
Is is just the air here on Planet Phallaxia, or are you happy to see me?
Date: 2010-01-05 07:11 pm (UTC)Okay, so Kirk's peen is about 1/10th of his height. If he's 6' (72 inches) tall, that's, umm... what? 7.2" give or take? And then Bones would be around the same height and then we take the... hmm. This requires thought. And math.
If his is 1.2 to 10 that's 12% of his body height. 12% of 72 inches is... 8.64 inches. Holy shit! GO BONES!
Heh, okay.
And yes, I should have considered the garters. I will never doubt you again!

Date: 2010-01-06 01:14 am (UTC)Naturally the figure's are awesome (stop making me like trek pairings), but I love that you've made the atmosphere such a big part of it. Though I can't imagine working on a pad that large - in watercolor no less. The thought of all those masking layer's and working with an unwieldy drawing pad makes me shudder.

Date: 2010-01-06 03:19 am (UTC)Nevermind the pron, but I love the shading on the planet. It looks awesomely 3D.

Date: 2010-01-06 08:25 am (UTC)And wow, the size is just crazy. For being new at it, I think you did amazingly well. I wouldn't have guessed it was watercolor from the richness of the colors. Normally when I think of watercolors I think of relatively bland or faded colors without the depth these have. So you must be doing some thing right. ;)
