Someone dumped this poor goat off on a dead-end residential street. The people who found her made a bunch of calls to different rescues and wildlife rehabs until they were finally directed to me, because someone had heard that aside from our pet store, we had a little farm.

Seriously, I have no idea who owned her before, but I would happily punch them in the junk if I found them. Her hooves were sooo grossly overgrown that she couldn't even walk. Like, not only were they too long, but they were SO long that they curled up SIDEWAYS. Three times longer than they should be. The people who found her thought she was deformed.

I have two goats and I have never trimmed their hooves. They generally wear down just fine from walking around. THIS GOAT WAS KEPT IN A CAGE AND NOT ALLOWED TO WALK. I'm guessing, for her milk. Which also means that she had been bred, and I can't allow myself to think about what happened to her baby. :(

When we got her home, hubby found some sharp pruning shears, and I pretended to be a goat ferrier. They still need some work (with a better tool) but at least she can walk now.

Anyhoo, she is lovely and sweet and was SO FUCKIN' RELIEVED to be milked. Her poor udder was like a rock. I have no idea the last time she'd been milked, but she was in obvious discomfort. I had never milked a goat before, but got the hang of it pretty quick. It's actually kind of fun, although I really have better things to do that squeeze goat teats twice a day.

I named her T'hy'la, which is Vulcan for brother/friend/lover. (I'm pronouncing it Thigh-la, although I'm sure it's got some fucked up way to actually be said.)

Speaking of Vulcans, (and we were, weren't we???) Here is a pic of my horse Spock. I posted about him in comments once, but never really did a proper post of him. He is not a rescue animal, but could be, because he is SO DAMN SKINNY. The people I bought him from never had his teeth done, and he pretty much couldn't eat properly. grrrr Hopefully, with a proper bite, we can pack some weight onto him. He is the sweetest boy! *loves him*

ETA: The goat is a LaMancha breed, and her ears are supposed to be like that. (Is it just me, or does she look a lot like our earless rescue cat Milky Wave? )
ETA2: Goats milk tastes pretty much the same as cow's milk. Except creamier, because I don't buy whole cow milk.

She's beautiful.

Who keeps a goat in a cage?? On a long lead attached to a kennel, sure, but I've never heard of goats being kept in cages. Poor thing.

I don't know for sure that she was kept in a cage, but the way here feet were overgrown, there is no way she spent any time walking around.

Awww, poor goat! Man, another thing on my list of why I hate people...Although you helping her certainly goes on the other list of why I LIKE people...

Your horse is so pretty!

Thanks!

Yeah, I"m getting pretty sick of dealing with other people's shit. I love the animals, but WHY THE FUCK IS IT MY JOB TO TAKE CARE OF THE 'GARBAGE' THAT OTHER PEOPLE SO CARELESSLY THROW AWAY??

And dude! If you're going to illegally keep a goat in the city, at least have the fuckin' fortitude to DRIVE IT OUT TO THE COUNTRY WHEN YOU DUMP IT! She is so lovely, it probably would have taken a max of three phone calls to find her a good home.

I was going to ask if she was a Sonnen. At the pet farm we used to have to cut their toenails because they were walking on asphalt. It was pretty easy. We had a...actually, it was the same size and shape as one of those tools you use to make lino carvings, but the tip was an inverted V. If they were short we could use scissors, too.

I liked cutting toenails.

I don't think I"d mind cutting toenails, but these were just OFF THE HOOK. I didn't know where to start.

Eeeeee, Star-Trek-named barnyard animals! :D

I'm pretty sure it's t-HY-la. But Thyla is a better name for a goat. She does remind me of Milky!

It is so awesome how you take in these animals and give them a loving home. And give them cool names.

Date: 2010-06-15 03:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Thanks! Yeah, Thyla is an easier name. Plus my kids are 7 and 8. Let's keep it simple.

I gotta say, I'm getting a little tired of being the animal dump zone. I love these guys, but if I FIND someone in mid-dump, I will seriously harm them.

You can't do anything wrong with T'hy'la because I don't think anyone really knows how to pronounce it. I have heard it the way you pronounce it (ti-la) but also as tuh-hi-la and twila. There has been once a really cool website called "The Vulcan Institute" but it is gone now.

Back to the goat. Poor thing. I am not a big fan of goats but that is not a way to treat an animal. I am glad the poor thing found a nice home with you. I think if I had a horse like yours then I would call it Kleiner Onkel which is the German name of Pippi LÃ¥ngstrumps horse

I wonder what Kleiner Onkel would translate to in English. (it would be a hilarious name for a horse!)

She has the best personality, given that she could not possibly have come from ideal circumstances with whomever her previous owners were. And I agree entirely, she's like a goat version of Milky Wave. XD

And Mr Spock.. oh Spock. He's a lovely, if slightly accident prone boy. I look forward to getting to know him better, and Ms Oats. : ) Thank you so much for letting Angie and I come out to ride now and again.

Thank god for people like you!

My uncle had goats and lived pretty near to town but always made room for them, not that they need a lot. Milking a goat was pretty fun though...but I didn't have to do it all the time, so I'm sure it gets tiring. :)

The second I saw the pic, I thought: Tripper is the home for all sad and pathetic white animals.

:)

Poor goat. It does shock me how people treat their animals. When I adopted my dog, he had giardia, big sores in his mouth, worms, etc. He'd never had his teeth cleaned, and his bones were all sticking out. It was so sad. A pug, too. I mean, why pay a thousand dollars for a dog and then treat it like shit? I don't get it.

Yeah, people suck. And, as you pointed out, they suck in odd, illogical ways.
