So ... I'm doing a panel for the upcoming Lubricus convention, and it's going to be The Art of the Peen.

I basically stated that it would be a tour through the ages, of different peen, and also some fandom stuff, and how classic art has contributed (or not) to the way we draw peen in fandom.

I have no doubt that I will be able to whip up something entertaining, but I could really use some SCHOLLARLY help with the classics. I honestly don't have a clue where to even start.

Added bonus: I wouldn't mind a co-chair, or at the very least, someone to help me with the AV side of the presentation, as I am the least techy person (next to my mother) on the planet.

I am shamefully weeks behind in replying to your last message re. hotel etc, b/c my work life has just... exploded. everywhere. messily.
so I'll reply to the tech part here: I'm not super-tech or anything, but I can generally figure out programs pretty quickly, so I'd be happy to help however I can.

Decorative penises (with wings!) have been found in Pompeii and Herculeaneum, hung with charms and chimes around the homes and gardens. They were, for the most part, made of brass and were very popular and appeared to be a whimsical bit of garden art and perhaps also for good luck.

I watch *waaay* too much History Channel to be healthy, but Pompeii and Herculeaneum are a good place to start. :D

Sadly, even though I'm an artist, I have no schooling in Art. Just lots and lots of practice and incessant abuse of my library card. :P

I don`t think they WERE very good luck, do you. What with .. the volcano and all.

but thanks, I will check that out.

Clearly enough of winged hard penisis must have had some power of attraction and hens the erruption. I am bad and I am going back to work now.

Adding to Deb's comment. The whores wore sandles that had adds imprints on the bottom, along with arrows. "follow me 4 a good time".

Yeah, I remember (very vaguely) the small penis being considered aesthetically pleasing in a neat, tidy, non-vulgar way in ye-olde Greek art, though Satyrs had huge erect knobs. The things the Maenads carried were pretty phallic, too, for plants. There were also the... fuck. The things. The little winged cocks. And the big cock sculptures that sometimes got carried about... hang on, I may know someone who actually remembers this shit. Will try them, see if they're about and want to cockwaffle :). I know the fig leaf was a recent thing; possibly had something to do with later Olympics or a visiting foreign dignitary or something? IDK. HELPFUL MUCH.

Oh, also, good sculpture porn in old architecture round India and...somewhere... else. wow, it really has been too long since I was at uni. I remember amazing reliefs of folk doing some fairly complicated shagging. Really beautiful curves and shapes to everything. Gah.

No, I really have to go away and stop being vague at you, but googling "lakshmana temple" will get you some great examples, and this wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khajuraho_Group_of_Monuments) link could give you some context for the temple and the buildings it's around. I realise that's only one example...

http://www.theoi.com/GalleryT3.html - a buttload of images of satyrs and maenads n stuff. Often shown erect and a bit larger than, say, athletes.

You could talk about Herms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herma)! Alcibiades got sentenced to death for supposedly knocking the cocks off all the Herms in Athens during the Peloponnesian War. They took their cocks seriously in Athens!

You might want to look at Michelangelo, the sculptures rather than the paintings - The Risen Christ also Day and Dusk on the tomb of Lorenzo de Medici, the famous David, the four Florentine Slaves and in particular the Dying Slave are all excellent examples but there are plenty more.

I've seen a number of fannish re-interpretations of the Dying Slave over the years, particularly one where someone had turned him into Chakotay IIRC.

AHAHAHAHA! I'm suddenly reminded of something an art history prof of mine said once upon a time. Bear in mind that this was an old, stuffy, tweedy, British dude. We were studying ancient Greek sculpture at the time, and there were some of the usual juvenile remarks about the rather small nature of the bits on the male sculptures. Without missing a beat, the prof said, "Yes, the ancient Greeks appeared to have been quite fond of a concise phallus."

...Hmm, I should use "concise phallus" in a fic...

Oh! And my cultural anthropology prof at my undergrad university had a collection of (ancient and not-so-ancient) South American erotic pottery. Things like jugs and pipes where the spouts are erect cocks. Like THESE, as a matter of fact! LOL You'll want to take a look at that. XD

"Concise phallus" for the utter win :D

I'm on a mission from [livejournal.com profile] ships_harry to talk about cock.

I don't know how much help I can be, I'm not an art major or anything, but I'll give it a whirl.

Most cultures seem to have dug cock as a fertility thing. The Greeks did too, but also took it a step further to artistic appreciation. That's discussed below, I see, so I'll just chuck you some links. Newlywed sex (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Shuvalov_Painter_erotic_scene_Antikensammlung_Berlin_F2414.jpg). Pervy Satyr (http://justbrowsing.lohudblogs.com/files/2008/01/6-attic-lekythos.jpg). Nudity in Greek art often reflected youth and sometimes the status of the person - Age disparity shippers are part of an ancient tradition (http://www.historyofinformation.com/images/palaistra_scene_louvre_G457.jpg).

And there's always the cocks at Delos (http://www.angelfire.com/super2/massimo1/greece0903/pages/Delos_-_Penis_statues_-_Dionysus_chapel.html).

[livejournal.com profile] ships_harry also mentioned the Sleeping Hermaphrodite (http://www.louvre.fr/llv/oeuvres/detail_notice.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673225803&CURRENT_LLV_NOTICE%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673225803&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=9852723696500817&baseIndex=12&bmLocale=en), so I thought I'd chuck in a link for that, too.

Someone below mentioned fig leaves. They are a new thing (relatively speaking), dating (IIRC) from the Renaissance. The Vatican got all righteous and horrified about peen on display, so had all visible peen removed (with a hammer, if need be) and the crotch covered over. After a while it became a fashion. It may just be an urban legend, but rumour has it that somewhere in the Vatican there is an entire room full of dismembered cocks.

One of the deep regrets of my life is that, having realised somewhat belatedly that I wasn't supposed to be taking photos of the artifacts in the Museum of Archaeology in Marseille, I didn't take a picture of the glorious rhyton (sort of a conical cup) dedicated to Bes, the Egyptian fertility god. It was a large, hollow penis pointing down. Bes sat straddling the top (of the cup/base of the cock), while a smaller female figure lay on it, on her stomach, and sucked him off. I think there was a hole at the bottom (of the cup/tip of the cock). Mere words cannot do it justice.

A moderately random point that just crossed my mind was that it might be interesting to consider whether there is any significance to prtrayals of cocks as attached to blokes as opposed to detached, autonomous cocks.

I think that is all I have to say about ancient art and cock, but I'll be sure to let you know if I think of anything else. Hope you're able to dredge something useful out of that lot!

I think it may be useful too to talk about male genitalia (or lack there of) being depicted in modern society. For example, you don't see male full frontals HALF as often as female. Also how Freud revolutionized how phallic symbolism can be found in *damn near everything*.

There's my two cents!

OMG you've got to mention Priapus, that shit is hilarious. I think I heard somewhere that our modern garden gnomes are based of old statues of Priapus: different crimes (thievery maybe) were punished by rape so people would put these statues in their lawns of these little guys with ginormous penis as a way of saying "If I catch you stealing my shit, I am going to make sure the guy dolling out your punishment is hung like a donkey!"

All the other statues of the same time period where actually quite small as like [livejournal.com profile] deliciousny said, large penii just weren't something they liked back then.

I'm not sure how accurate this all is(you might want to research it), but at least check out the wiki article: its got some hilarious pictures.
