OMFG! I just spent two VERY long hours at our schools PAC meeting (parent advisory council, basically PTA) and I am soooooooooo fucking frustrated.

I imagine that it's like being in poltics, except with stupider, more closed minded people.

Someone from the community, who owns a seasonal business that just closed for the year, offered to give us FREE hotdogs and drinks, which we can sell at the school and make 100% profit. I even offered to HOST the damn thing (ie: put out the fliers to inform the parents, collect the money, COOK THE FUCKING DOGS, and hand them out to the kids. What did PAC say?

PAC:Oh. Well, what kind of drinks are they?
Me: I'm not sure. Most likely pop and or juice.
PAC: But ... but ... those aren't HEALTHY drinks.
Me: Yeah. But once a month or so, we put on pizza lunch, or hot dog lunch, and generally, on those occasions we offer pop. (we don't sell pop or have soda machines on school property)
PAC: I don't know. Soda sort of goes against our 'healthy lunch' policy. (btw: there is no offical policy regarding food. More of a guidline.)
Me: Yes. BECAUSE HOT DOGS ARE SO FUCKING HEALTHY!!!! This is a lovely oppourtinity for us to make a profit, at no risk to us. Not to mention THAT I'VE FUCKING OFFERED TO DO ALL THE WORK.
PAC: ... hums.... haws ...
Me: *fumes*
PAC: Well ... maaaaybe. I don't know ... should we VOTE on it?
Me: YOU'RE KIDDING, RIGHT?
PAC: Well, someone offered us free pop last year, and we turned them down.

What the ever loving fuck, people! I swear to god Imma smack a bitch.

Then later (after they begrudgingly accepted the hot dog lunch thing) I brought up another fundraising idea (which, face it, is pretty much 90% of what we do as a group.)

On this fundraising idea, I also offered to do 100% of the work. I got the same flack! I dunno....we already have this other fundraising thing going on .... I think parents will feel overwhelmed ....bla bla bla.

This 'thing' was basically ordering (or not) from a place that a lot of people order frozen food from all the time, and with this, we'd make 20% of the profit. The people would go to that store to pick up their stuff (no risk for the schoool, or pick ups to deal with).

The principal says: 20%? Is it even worth it? Generally, we don't do fundraising unless we can make at least 30%. SHOULD WE VOTE ON IT???

I swear to God, I just about walked out right there. Not only do I have to sit through HOURS of boring bullshit, but they're like a bunch of negative hens clucking and clucking and clucking all their negative no-can-do crap.

How about, SURE! Give it a try! Hey, if YOU'RE willing to do all the work, why not?
FUCK YOU BITCHES!

I do pizza lunches once per month (on my own time, btw) and make the PAC about 40% of their yearly fucking fundraising. And seriously, when I took THAT over, I also got flack about the way I wanted to do it. It wouldn't work. Someone tried that years ago and it didn't work, so don't bother, etc etc etc.

FLAILS. I'm done with them. Seriously. AND I'M THE CO-CHAIR! And have been for like 4 years! I just cannot take all that negativity anymore. Let alone the bla bla bla bla running on and on and on about shit that should only take 10 min to discuss. I know I"m not the only one that feels this way, but the people who say NO are much more invested than the people who don't really give a shit.

Really. I COULD BE AT HOME DRAWING PORN RIGHT NOW PEOPLE, CAN WE HURRY THIS SHIT UP?

Okay, I feel better now. Take my negative energy interwebs, and make porny gifs with it! (cause that's how gifs are born, people!)

THE MORE YOU KNOW. *rainbow*

Argh, I had similar problems with our grad student association.

I COULD BE AT HOME DRAWING PORN RIGHT NOW PEOPLE, CAN WE HURRY THIS SHIT UP?

Ahhaha you should say that!

Ugh, I think I just might.

I am beginning to think that EVERY ad hoc association has the same problems.

No wonder I eschew politics at all costs!

Slightly different, but we once made the mistake of attending a Residents Association meeting in the building where my mother's flat is. (My mother's in care and we let her flat to give her an income.) We weren't expecting it to be exciting - forty or fifty elderly people in a room is not a recipe for wild times anyway - but they had an hour and a half to discuss important issues and they spent an *hour* of it talking about window-cleaning. ("Why aren't the windows cleaned more than once a month? We can't see out. And why don't they clean them inside as well as out?") Round and round and round, every time you thought it was going to end it started up again in a different part of the room.

We ignore those invitations now!

Okay, picture THAT meeting, and then picture someone offering to clean their windows FOR FREE! And then them turning the offer down, because they'd never done it that way before.

That was my day. ;)

My husband is advising that I don't do anything rash, but OMG I want to send off a nasty email to the entire board. WITH MY DOOF PORN IN IT! And maybe some Snarry chan. :D

Well, you know what they say, a committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but as a group decide that nothing can be done.

I think you should learn to amuse yourself at these meetings by challenging yourself to insert a quote from Monty Python every time you meet.

If I may offer some examples:

"Our chief weapon is surprise... surprise and fear... fear and surprise... our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency."

"It's just a flesh wound!"

"Didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective."

"You can't expect to wield supreme excutive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you."

"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

"French person! Today the blood of many a valiant knight shall be avenged."

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us? "

"Always look on the bright side of life."

You know, the usual. ;P

Oh god, that is SO IT in a nutshell.

I once heard someone else say that 'A camel is a horse created by committee.' Except, of course, that would mean they actually CAME UP WITH SOMETHING, which is beyond the meagre skill-set of MY committee.

I'm not sure of your advice. Is there a point to being clever when NOBODY WILL NOTICE OR APPRECIATE IT? If I do start spewing about 'shrubberies', and I continue to get blank stares, I might actually have to Cut A Bitch.

Yeah, committees tend to do a whole lot of nothing.

No one is supposed to get it! Be sneaky. It will distract you from the stupid during the meetings from hell, then give you something to LOL about, later, when telling the story. :D

Uuuuuugh. You have no idea how familiar this all sounds coming from the library. Except, I get the added bonus of "not being from around here" in a rural setting. :-/ I've had a few successes, but I'm still *amazed* at all the nega-hen **pictures a crazy dark chicken pokemon** energy. Do they really *want* to change things or just sit around and kevetch?

Ha! Ironically, this is also a rural setting, and I am 'not from around here' either, although nobody has pulled that shit with me yet.

There seems to be two people there who are obsessed with 'healthy food' and have made it their life mission to ... I dunno ... talk about it ad naseum until the rest of us plunge our thumbs into our eyesockets??? We seriously go over the same shit every damn month.

I will finish the things I've signed up for, but I am done with meetings. I think they'll be surprised when they are missing someone who is actually willing to get off her ass and DO THINGS instead of just drone on and on about how they can't be done.

that's... riduculous. and somehow I am not surprised by it.
I mean, seriously, are they not capable of seeing that 20% is still more than what they'd have if they didn't do it?
plus, how about a little respect for the time and effort you've already put in. > : (
If it were me i'd probably ditch them, but you have kids you - you know, love and stuff -- who are affected by it, and of course, it sounds like you're one of the few logical people there, so if you leave, who will keep them from falling off their chairs and dying of starvation when they can't figure out how to stand up?

Why do these sorts of organizations actively attempt to make working with them as unpleasant as possible?
