Bucket List Item/Question

Okay, aside from having sex with Bill Murray I don't really have a bucket list, but there are a few ... odd things that I'd really like to do at some point in my life.

The one that's been rolling around in my head lately is voice overs for cartoons. Despite having no experience whatsover, I really think I'd be good at it. hee! I've said this sentence many times and have often been right!! I'm pretty good at accents and can do passable Bart Simpson/Lisa Simpson/cast of Spongebob/Phineas/Doofenshmirtz/Mickey Mouse type voices.

My question to you, amazing flist is: Can you reccoment a script/story that would have a shit-ton of voices? I want to do an 'audition tape' to send out to studios. Something that could really showcase my voice/s. The script doesn't need to be cartoony or even funny, as a cartoon reading of very straight material can be amusing by itself.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but VO is probably one of the most competitive aspects of acting. Unlike on-camera, where you can squeak by with a pretty face, VO actors always have to be at the top of their game. You can't fake the mic.

www.voicebank.net is the online database for top VO talent. You can listen to the demo's of Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), John DiMaggio (Bender) as well as people like Willem DaFoe. It's not just 'celebrity' talent. In the animation demos, you're sure to hear familiar characters by people you never heard of. Check out Pat Fraley. He did the voice of Krang from Teenage Mutant ninja turtles and Wildcat from Tailspin. It looks like he does only commercials these days.

Listen to their demos. That's the bar to reach. If your game is not as tight as theirs, a casting agent won't even reach the end of your demo. Most, if not all, TV animation is union. You have to be a member of the Screen Actor's Guild to even be considered.

That's not to say you can't do this at all. Some people do quite a bit of non-union work via online casting sites such as voice123.com. There inns;t much in the way of animation, but there are indies or student projects sometimes. Most of these are small radio spots or instructions for online tutorials.

Good news for me, is that I'm not looking for a new career, just a hobby. There's lots of independant film (read shitty) here in Canada, much of it funded by the government. There's also a lot of stuff made right where I live ('cause it's cheap) so I think my chances are pretty good, considering.
