So, uh ... smells. What do you like? What do you hate? But just to make this interesting, I want to know what UNUSUAL things you like and hate. Most people hate the smell of dirty ass, but like fresh baked apple pie (and if you think differently, I"m not sure I want to know about it ...)

Me, I HATE the smell of tires. I cannot walk by the new bicycle section in Wal-mart or the actual car tire section at Costco or Canadian Tire without gagging. We even sell these dog toys called Tire Biters, and yeah, you guessed it, GAG! I refuse to unpack them and price them.

Bonus hate: Perfume. well, most of it. Even if I like the smell, it tends to make me nauseous.

Love: Call me crazy, but I quite like the smell of pig shit and cow shit. Not in an 'Imma make some fabric softener out of it and put it on my clothes' kind of way, but a nice clean barn with some fresh shit smells really good to me. Like outdoors and country. Probably a throw back from visiting my Grandparent's farm as a kid.

I also really love the smell of fresh hay. It IS a nice smell, but I'm guessing most people wouldn't have had the oppourtunity to enjoy it much.

AND YOU????

You will probably gag I love the smell of gasoline and motor oil. I also like the smell of an electrical storm and the ozone it releases into the air.

Smells that will make me gag? Sour milk and cheap floral perfume.

Oh man, I used to LOVE the smell of gas. I still kind of do, but it makes me naseous, so I don't really indulge. ;)

Hate: Onions. Can't stand the smell of them, or the taste. My stepmother used to fry up onions in the morning for her omelette and I couldn't go near the kitchen without feeling ill.

Love: I love the smell of the tea tin in my kitchen. It smells earthy and comfortable. I also like the smell of my mum's linen cabinet, because she's used the same softener/static sheets for years, and it's the smell of home.

I like well cooked onions, but can't stand them raw, taste or smell.

Oh yes, tea! I'm a big tea drinker, and yeah, I really like the smell of it too.

I love the smell of the earth just before it rains.

I hate anything too perfumey.

There's the odd perfume I like, but most of it is gross.

I hate the smell of my hands after I've been handling elastic bands, but I kind of like the smell of skunk spray. My hometown almost eternally smelled of skunk, and it makes me nostalgic.

There seems to be quite a few people who like the smell of skunk. You're no alone. :D

My hubby loves the smell of skunk, and when we do run across it (even if it's not really skunk but just some fierce weed), he always enjoys it while I'm wrinkling my nose and trying not to breathe. He also loves the smell of "old car" exhaust, which once again makes me try to exhale as much as possible and not breathe again.
I don't care for the smell of tires either, but I can handle it without gagging.
The thing I hate the smell of that I'm probably gonna horrify most folks with is: coffee. I hate it. It smells like feet. Blech! I also hate the smell of alcohol--drinking or rubbing. Hand sanitizers make me gag. And I HATE HATE HATE the smell of cigars (smells like burning garbage) and cigarettes.
Love? I like the smell of gasoline/lighter fluid and resins and stains, but not paint. I love the not-unusual scents of citrus, fresh bread, popping popcorn, bacon, and grilling steak (especially if it's getting all char-ry--mmmm, SMELL the carcinogens!).
I also don't like most perfumes/colognes/air fresheners. I hate the smell of Lysols and bleach but love the smell of Pine Sol and Windex.
It's so interesting how people differ! :)

Yes, you are alone with the hate of coffee. I don't drink it, as it hurts my stomach, but I LOVE the smell. In the grocery isle, where you can buy unground beans, I always stop and have a few good sniffs.

And ugh! I hate windex! My hubby is an addict.

Smells I love: old library books, night-blooming jasmine, coffee, cheap plastic shoes, tires, sharpened pencils, men's cologne, chimney smoke, cherry tobacco

Smells I hate: glycerine, whatever Corn Huskers Lotion smells like, freshly mown grass, cod liver oil

Date: 2012-05-27 02:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
You hate freshly mowed grass? i think that's a great smell! I'm not fond of sharpened pencils. I even go so far as to use woodless ones for my art, so I don't have to smell that.

Hate: cinnamon airfresheners, fruit airfresheners in bathroom (fruity-ass... Classy) vomit, moldy towels, blueberry anything, urine, houses that are full of cats/dogs and unkept, raw chicken, dirty sitting dishes, someone who's been by a fryer too long, dining hall dumpsters, new asphalt, anything in my fridge....

Love: wet, old air conditioners - especially in cars or the window box kind, cheap motel (i LOVE this smell!!) old casinos, my moms perfume/my mom in general, museum smell, elementary school cafeteria, old old perfumes, church on Christmas, fake new car smell, old car exhaust (way to kill brain cells!) my daughter - even when she's sweaty and gross, fancy expensive gentlemen's cologne, the laundry exhaust shoot on houses, bathwater.

that airconditioner thing is HILARIOUS! I don't really have any feels about it either way, but I know exactly the smell that you're talking about. Why do you think you love it so much?

I HATE new car smell. I am aghast that people actually BUY car fresheners with that odour. I'd prefer ASS .

There's these protein pills a friend of mine used to take...one at a time was fine, but if you opened the entire bottle and smelled it, it was like the smell of ass. Ugh.

Anyway, I'm sure there's smells I hate but I like fruity type smells, like mangos and tropical type stuff. AND CHOCOLATE. I liiike pine and rain smell and uh... 'incoming thunderstorm smell' which is slightly different than rain smell.

Don't like the smell of cigarettes and definitely not the smell of a fresh cat crap, though they seem to think they're helpful when they wait til I'm making food to take a big smelly dump -_-

ALSO I DON'T REALLY LIKE DICK SMELL.

OH AND I LOVE THE SMELL OF MAPLE BACON. Apparently that's what I smell like myself...

I hate the smell of privet blossom; it's not unpleasant in itself, but it seems to be the only thing I'm allergic to and it makes me sneeze and makes my eyes go gritty, and it usually lasts about a month.

For similar reasons I hate the smell of lavender and star anise, both of which give me migraine. Again, I quite like lavender for itself, but its effect on me is unfortunate to say the least.

The best smell, I think, is new paper - either blank paper in large quantities, or new books. The same goes for new wood, or the smell of wood being sawn. I also love the scent of new fabric, either in the shop or when I've just got it home and I'm about to do something with it. I've never felt the same way about cooking ingredients as I do about craft materials - food is just food, but paper, wood and fabric you can Do Things With!

I am addicted to the smell of dryers with laundry drying inside. I want to die smelling that. I want heaven to smell like that. I used to stand outside laundromats just inhaling.

I hate the smell of raw asphalt. I don't know what it's called, but when they're pouring it into the street to dry and harden? That smell is the most digusting smell on the planet. Next to the smell of marijuana.

Date: 2012-05-27 03:04 pm (UTC)

I love the smell of my cats fur, he smells of deep blue vanilla and I love nothing more than to bury my nose in his pelt, inhaling deeply.
And the smell of horses on a rainy day, when they're just a little wet, its all purple with soft strings of golden yellow.

I really hate the smell of cold cigarette smoke, it tastes dirty and sickly grey.

Date: 2012-05-27 03:05 pm (UTC)

Old ashtrays, and the lingering smell of smoke on someone is gross, but when I am outside, and walk by someone who is smoking, I LOVE that smell, be it cigarrettes, cigar or pipe.

Yes, fresh smoke is good, smells warm and dark brown and reminds me of my dad.

I love the smell of the bush just after rain, Eucalypts and Wattle mainly, actually most gum trees are amazing at any time, wood smoke, the ocean, lavender, bacon, frying onions, most berries and apples, wool, I quite like the smell of farms too but not chickens, wormwood, rosemary, roses, chocolate, ohh, old books, coconut oil,

I hate the smell of perfume, fabric softner and most washing liquids, supermarket bread and often the flour too (don't know if it's because wheat makes me sick), most cosmetics, I don't see the point in adding fragrance to things. Most rubber and plastics I don't like, chook poo that people put on their gardens is hideous, mould really gets me, aluminium when wet, fish or seafood of any kind, paint strippers and solvent glues, artificial sweets (candy and stuff that is just numbers rather than flavours from real food)

Most of the smells I hate give me migraines or certainly smell worse when I have one but the migraines make me over-sensitive to smells.

Date: 2012-05-27 03:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Haa! It took me a minute to get Chook Poo. Chicken shit, right? People here seem to use cow shit much more often, although I'm sure chicken shit would work well too.

Loves (of the possibly-unusual kind): sawdust, mown grass, warm cat belly!, white out, skunk, eucalyptus/menthol, mimeographs,
and cigarettes/smoke; my mom smoked when I was a kid and i've always loved the smell, even though I don't smoke myself

Hate: the smell paper mills put out, my mother's perfume/lotion combination, raw shrimp, old lemons or lettuce, febreez, library books - that's not all, just the ones I can think of that are the worst.

this is fun! i love these questions and reading others answers

so mine,

love: parking garages (idk if its the carbon monoxide, but i just love the smell, and sometimes enclosed concrete staircases smell like it too, but obviously not as authentic as the garage), when i was a kid i used to sniff sharpie ink on paper and would love the smell of gasoline, i also love the smell when water gets on hot asphalt, like when you wash your car yummm! and whatever my mom uses on her face is just one of the loveliest smells in the world, and its on her pillows too so they smell really good (yes i am a mama's girl), oh and the smell of my dogs paws, like sometimes i will kinda kiss them which i realize thats kinda gross, but i don't care! and weirdly i think, i like my own bodily smells, which idk if that is actually weird at all since you would think your own scents are nice since they are yours and all

what i hate: dirty dog, like when you pet a dog and then your hand stinks, i hate that! also, cigarette smoke makes me sick and i hate it. and that is all i can think of now, obviously i like more smells than i hate ;)

solid unsweetened chocolate? Or the coco powder?

I've never smell a human corpse, but my Basset hound once came home after rolling in something very dead, and it was .... compelling and horrifying. Very, very sweet and it made my eyes water.

I hate the smell of: cut grass, bay rum, sickeningly sweet perfume (my nickname for it is "eau de stinky grandma"), coffee, cigarettes, McDonalds, wet paint, tea tree oil, grapefruit, anything rotten, anybody who doesn't bathe often enough, new car smell, cheap weed, formaldehyde.

I love the smell of: garlic, Chinese food, some perfumes that aren't icky sweet, lemon, roses, almond extract, eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, red meat cooking, tea, vanilla, most flowers, basmati rice, pine trees, orange, chocolate

I read once about a guy who liked the smell of cow crap because it reminded him of the fun he used to have on his uncle's farm when he was a kid.

I quite like grapefruit.

I'd like to add to my previous comment, because after I replied to you yesterday I went to visit my mother and I came to the conclusion that the smell I hate most of all is Care Homes! It's a peculiar combination of poop and pee and cleaning stuff and air freshener and food and stale perfume and sweat, and it has such unhappy associations for me that I wouldn't be sorry if I never had to smell it again.

I worked at McDonald's in high school. We would clean the shake machine by running buckets of water through. One night I was carrying two huge buckets of slimy shake water back to dump when the guy cleaning the fryer dumped nasty burnt french fry oil all over the floor. It's nearly impossible to get back on your feet on a floor covered with a mixture of slimy water and oil. We were both covered head to foot. I think it took half a dozen baths to get that smell off of me. Kind of a combination of spoiled milk and rancid oil.

"Not in an 'Imma make some fabric softener out of it and put it on my clothes' kind of way" ROFL! Hmmm ... my choices aren't quite as interesting as yours. I adore the smell of olives, & coconut, tea leaves, coffee beans, & I love the smell of hay too (even though I'm allergic to the stuff). I hate the smell of garlic, but there's nothing as earth-shatteringly nauseating as the dementia ward in Parkwood. I don't think there are many people who would disagree with that last one. *shudder*

Horse manure smells much nicer than cow or porker poop. I'm just sayin' ;)

A lot of perfumes give me headaches. When I find one that suits me, I'm extremely loyal to it.
