House Art WIP

I thought it might be fun to post a work in progress. I know that I'm endlessly fascinated how other people draw their stuff, so now, mighty flist, you shall be subjected to my artistic meanderings.

This is the first time I've drawn Hugh Laurie, but he has such a neat face and captivating eyes that I couldn't resist.

When I draw, I lightly sketch out the lines, then go with a soft paintbrush and fill in the shadow areas with graphite. To do this, I scribble a big, black square of paper with a 6b fat graphite pencil, then I go over it with the brush to pick up the graphite. Sort of like how you pick up eyeshadow and then apply it.

In this WIP#1 I've done all of that, and then, because I am impatient, I also drew in his eye. Sort of like eating desert before dinner, but hey, it's MY art, I can do whatever I want! I promised myself that I would only draw for 10 min (to do that eye) and of course, here I am, wasting more time, posting it on teh interweb.

I also realize that I"ve made his nose/face too long, so I drew I line where I think his nose should end, and I"ll bring his face up a few centimeters. I don't really do any precise measuring when I draw, I just sort of eyeball it, and generally, compare it to the subject's eye. Okay...if his eye is ------this long, then, his nose is two and a half eyes long, type of thing. And according to my scientific formulae, his nose is too long.

that will be the next WIP!

Eeeee, that eye is wonderful! :D This is going to totally be my favorite piece of yours, ever, you know? XD Oh, and you may not need to fix the nose... Hugh Laurie has an uncommonly long face. It may be just fine.

Yes! He does have a super long face, but I think...I still over-elongated it. Great for cartoons, but not for realistic stuff! That's the nice thing about lightly filling in the shadows first, I get a better idea of how right/wrong the shape of the face is.

It's pretty common for me to draw chins too long, cheeks too fat and mouths too small.
I must have a skewed perspective of people! ;)

Ah! You use a BRUSH! How cool! I wondered how you got such smooth, velvety tones.

I love how that eyeball is staring out at us, like it's a real eyeball embedded in a piece of paper, glaring out. :) Creepy!!!!

Hee! It IS kind of creepy, isn't it? Yes, I use a paintbrush type make up brush, and also a sponge ended type make up brush and then the biggie....paper towel! ;) Pretty high tech stuff! :D

Ahhh, the eye is burning a hole in my soul (with its beauty, of course)! I love the WiP view, it already looks so much like him. I can only imagine what the finished product will look like. I'm also fascinated to know that you use a brush- aha! Sounds like a fun technique.

Yes, I hate those little blending stump thingies, unless you're doing reaaally small detailed work. For larger areas (and I tend to draw quite big), they just make striations.

[identity profile] florence-craye.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those stump things are bad news for larger areas. You've really made the brush work for you!

Looking at WIP art is like getting candy. I love how this is turning out, and it's just amazing to see how your shading process begins.

Also, Hugh Laurie makes me squee.

:D Yes, I love WIPs too! You can learn so much, just from seeing how people go about drawing, and to me, I think drawings almost look cooler half drawn, than finished.

and yes, Hugh Laurie makes me squee too! ;)

Amazing, but you nailed him with just that eye, and the mouth, I think. Hurry up and finish, you tease!!!

Ooo, that's coming out lovely!! :^D

[identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! hopefully it doesn't crash and burn before I'm done! It doesn't happen often, but it DOES happen!

*SQUEE TO THE MAX!!!!*

Oh, that's really good! You have House's attitude perfectly. And that one eye is great. :D

[identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :D Hopefully it will look better with two eyes! :D

[identity profile] outofthisplace.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
that eye really is intensely incredible. It almost scares me a little :-D

[identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
thanks! It IS a bit creepy, just rolling around in there, isn't it??

[identity profile] accioslash.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, that eye is perfect. I think you're right about the nose being a bit too long, but I don't know if I would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it. I *always* notice eyes. Noses not so much.

[identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love noses! I mean, eyes are cool, and say a lot about a person, but noses can have the coolest shadows! and everyone's noses are so different! (especially my favourite Potions Masters!!) :D

[identity profile] accioslash.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they do say eyes are the windows to the soul. Which is a lot less squicky than noses being the window to anything. ;D

[identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! You are too funny! *snort*
