No, not from the movie Iron Man 2!

[livejournal.com profile] dickgloucester has a really cool Iron Man icon iconiron and I wanted to do a window of it. She wasn't sure of the original artist, and even when I googled 'iron man cubism' or iron man vorticim I only came up with this and I don't think it's the same artist.

EDIT: Artist found! It's Liam Brazier: http://www.inprnt.com/gallery/liambrazier/

Anyhoo, I just squinted, and worked off the icon and here is the resulting window! It measures 2'x 2' and was about 160 pieces of glass. Sadly, the icon uses a lot of pinks, but they don't really exist in glass. So reds and oranges instead.

It's been grey and cloudy around here for days, so this was the best picture I could get. I'll try again if the sun ever comes out.

Thank you! I really just copied the icon, so I can't take credit for any perspective work.

Copper foil. I've never done lead came. I REALLY want to try actual glass staining/painting. I"ve been watching tutorials. :D

that's amazing <3 love the colours you went with.

out of curiosity, how do you "bind" the glass together with the black stuff so it doesn't fall out of the frame?

Date: 2013-10-07 09:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Thank you!

You actually put metallic tape around the edge of each piece of glass, then solder them all together with lead. The melted lead sticks to the metal in the tape.

ohh! well that makes sense. i was entertaining fanciful ideas of the black bits being specially made frames or something... this sounds so much simpler and more sensible. :D

:D You're not actually wrong with that theory. Church windows (and all stained glass windows 100 years ago) use a sort of lead frame that you cut and put around each piece of glass, but then Tiffany (I"m sure you've heard of his lamps?) He devised the method of putting the copper foil around the glass, thus allowing artists to make much smaller and more delicate designs.

Oooh, very nice. Why no pinks, I wonder? You know me (or even if you don't), when something doesn't exist I have to dig and find out. I don't know if it's curiosity or pure stubornness, lol.

Date: 2013-10-07 09:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
:D There are a FEW pinks, but they're expensive. It has to do with how the glass is fired. most 'stained' glass is infused with colour in the firing process, and pinks need multiple firings to have it show up, and the cost is much higher. (at least, that's MY understanding of it)

Once again, very lovely! The variety of shades of red and gold is beautiful, and I love the blocky style. If I had a piece like this I would proudly hang it in my window!

awesome!!!

have you thought of making smaller ones? Panes of glass I mean, although I'd imagine it'd probably be more difficult to get the smaller bits of the picture....

Oh, man, it would frustrate me to hell and gone. I love the way you elevate every craft with fan art! It's both beautiful and amusing.

My kid made a stained glass craft at camp with silver solder. It has pride of place on the tchochkeh bookshelf.

I wish it was cheaper to make, and then I would sell them, but the cost of glass alone on this one was over $100. Plus copper foil, lead and chemicals.

Not a cheap hobby!
