I went to visit Julie and Dj in Vancouver/Abbotsford last week, and drew this on the plane ride there. Crayola crayons. (sketched in pencil first, because I'm not THAT good!)
I found a simple tutorial online that just made sense to me. (sadly, that lj has been purged) but look around at tutorials. I saw a few and nothing clicked, and then, one did!
See and I always find them way too waxy too really do any real shading with. I end up with wax blooms all over the place and a ruined drawing. A shame since crayons are not in short supply here.
Quality definitely plays a part. The super shit ones you get at the restaurants are totally unusable, but Prang and Crayola are pretty good.
The trick is to leave the darker parts of the drawing un done until you get to the browns and blacks. You have about 3 layers max before it starts to gum up, so you have to go in with an eye for 'less is more', unlike a lot of other mediums.
and having a thick hole'd pencil sharpener never hurts, for the smaller black details.
