ooooooh! What a horrible, frustrating medium to work in! *stomps on chalk pastels and breaks them into little bits*

I mean, I'm fairly happy with the final result, but it was so messy, and drawing with those stoopid little rectangles is like drawing with the blunt end of a crayon! How the hell are you supposed to get any details with a big, fat rectangle? Not to mention that for some reason, I had to practically sand off the factory edge to get any colour. I spent the first two minutes just making blank scratches on the paper. grrrrr

On the good side, they blended well, (too well) and they were very quick to work with, but nope....don't like 'em! I think I had to stop and wash my hands about forty times to avoid totally smudging everything together.

I love those chalks. But then again, I can't draw worth a damn, and they let me pretend I can.

Now that I've had a 12 hour break, I'm willing to give them another try. I guess I was just expecting them to be less ... dusty? More pastelly? :D

I think you've done a very good job considering it's your first time using chalk pastels. I particularly like her eyes- they are very much like her! The way I've found best to get sharp lines is to use the edges of the pastel where it kind of bends around to the other side- just that tiny space acress the edge, because it is smaller than the point if you can find one. Ok, I don't know if that made sense. But they take some working with, at the very least due to the mess they make!

Thanks! I don't know why I was having such a hard time getting them to make any colour at all. It was almost, like, when you're using chalk on a chalkboard, but the board is greasy, and it won't write? Except...my paper wasn't greasy! There was some strange coating on the chalk, I guess. grrrr

I ended up snapping them in half, and then they drew just fine.

*eyeroll*

I think the pastel factory puts a coating on them so while they're in the box or in transit, they don't just rub all over each other and become a big mess of chalky dustiness. You can break them in half or use sandpaper to get the coating off, I think.

I'm glad you will try them again. I love seeing you work with new media!

Thanks! That's so sweet of you to say! I'm actually having a lot of fun playing with new media. Now that the world of colour has been opened up to me, I feel like a kid in a candy store.

so man possibilites, too many RL comittments! :D

Any requests??

Thank you! As much as the chalk gave me grief, I must admit that I'm happy with the way that they blended.

Thank you! I think I'll give them another try. I really am happy with the results, just not the original process.

I think I like the chalk better than the crayons. The coloring is more subtle even when it's bright.

Yes, they blend, where the crayons don't, they just layer...

I'll give them another try, now that I know what to expect.
