The convention went … surprisingly well! The first four hours were a bust. I was giving serious reconsideration to my artistic paper cut career, and then BAM! Someone bought two. Then someone else bought one. And another and another! All told I sold 23 pieces!! Yay!

Now I am setting my sights higher on Comic Cons. But do you wanna know what sucks? I can't do any American ones! I've done some research, and it is illegal for me to take my artwork down to the States (I'm in Canada) and sell it. I can go down with a portfolio and get people to commission me, but I can't take and sell in one trip. grrrr

That's okay, there's still 10 or so comic conventions here in Canada, so I will make due.

In the meantime, I've done some more cuts (gotta re-stock!) and I've also tried my hand (with limited success) at paper sculpting. omg so hard!

The Scully was a re-do for someone. I brought two Mulders and only one Scully, so they paid me to make them the set. ;) And yes, I realize that the letters are crooked in the Paper View sculpture. Sadly, I didn't realize it until I was already done. grrrr. Straight lines! Who needs them?

I also made a few cuts AT the convention, but they're boxed up downstairs, so I haven't photographed them yet.

Ha ha ha Paper View - awesome punnage! Congrats on the sales but how come you can't sell in the US? Damn. COuld you get round it by taking your stock to show, people could 'order' an item on display (and pay there and then) and you could't go home and post the 'finished' piece to them?

I don't know for sure, but I really think that people would want to buy the stuff right then and there. (I know I would)

I also think they would be sticky about me bringing the art there. The border guy (who was very nice) said that I could bring a portfolio, but not the actual art for sale. bummer!

And my son came up with the name Paper View. He is a clever boy!

Ah right, but they wouldn't know if it was the actual pieces you were going to sell (unless you had loads of duplicates I suppose). So effectively it would be your portfolio. But I suppose you're3 right, most people would want to take the art away with them. Though there are advantages to posting it afterwards as it takes away the worry about losing it or damaging it. Plus with something like this which is almost 3D, it's good to see it in the flesh.

Still it sounds like Canadian conventions might be easier.

I, too, am interested in learning why you aren't allowed to sell in the US, so perhaps we Slytherins can put our cunning minds to figuring out a way around that. ;D
And, natch, your stuff is brilliant!

Hee! Well, I'm sure there are ways around it, but it's a matter of not getting caught. ;)

The border patrol guy had a name for it, which I forget, but it is illegal for me to go to the US and sell stuff in the same trip. I would be allowed to show a portfolio and take orders from people, but not sell stuff directly. ??? I honestly have no idea why that is, but dems da rulz!

I would be very tempted to work around that. Ship stuff ahead and then pick it up and sell it. But I also have two impressionable young teenagers that don't really need to see their Mama breaking the law, even if it's a lame law. kwim?

I hear ya. You know lots of US folx--is there anyone you could drum up an agreement with that would show THEM to be the one who's selling them, or you send things to them earlier (like you said), or something like that?

I kinda feel like Nick Fury... there's some sort of rule Border Patrol told you about, "but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it." ;D

Ha, yes, Nick Fury indeed. It has been my experience that Border Patrol people (in most countries) have absolutely zero fucking sense of humour.
These are not people that I want to fuck with. ;)

YAY! I'm so glad you sold your pieces - you deserve success with this art.

So glad for you that you made a lot of sales! (Finally!)

Love the Scully in particular.

That does suck that you can't easily sell in the USA - I would guess it's to do with taxation. You could perhaps set yourself up as a small business in the US, but then you would also have to file US tax returns and it would get extremely complicated.

I don't know if the business thing would work. I think it has more to do with me being a Canadian citizen 'working' in the states. There are probably ways to work around it, but without a degree in import/export laws, it's probably to complicated for me. :D

I'm late commenting because I was at a supernatural convention (with Timothy O.! :D)
LOVE these. Scully is amazing - especially her hair. Beautifully done.

and also, happy birthday! :) (Presuming Livejournal has it right.)

Did you meet him? Did he still have his King!Beard? :D

And thanks, yes, LJ does not lie! ;)

He still had a beard going, yes (not sure it was the same length as in Galavant, though). I got to see him on stage answering questions (that man has some Loooong legs, and he, in his own words, 'stalks' across the stage.) And I got to get my picture taken with him -- I'll post that with more details when I get the jpeg copies. But not really 'meet' him in the have-a-conversation sense.

psst; you know creation does supernatural conventions with a vendor's area in Canada, yes? They have one in Vancouver in August (which I might be at).

I know I asked before (but it might not have been Creation, but I think it was.) Everything has to be licensed. No fan art. *eyeroll*

That is some gorgeous work. I love Scully, in particular.

I'd dropped by to wish you a very Happy Birthday and got some nice art in exchange. :-) Thanks for sharing. Hope the year ahead is awesome!

They are amazing and I'm so glad you're having sales! My mind is blown over the Iron Man one; how is that done to look so 3D!! Is it 3D??

Date: 2016-03-03 05:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Thank you.

Yes, iron man IS 3D … sort of. Just slightly. He might be a centimetre tall when you lay him flat, but the paper is curved to give the illusion that he's more 3D. Actually, it's a really hard medium to find. How 3D? This much? Too much? I am brand new at it, so I"m still working it out.
