I think Greg has quite an air of realism to him. Snape is kinda realistic, but something's missing...Maybe it's because Snape is a literary character, not a television character. While the generality of what Snape looks like is the same, everyone's details of him are different so he'll never quite have that air of realism. Unless, of course, you base him on Alan Rickman (who I always thought was just too pretty for the role).
I love Rickman, so I am not a good judge if he was right for the role or not. He's not the Snape that I see in my mind when I'm reading the books, but IFUCKINLOVEHIMSOMUCH that it doesn't really matter. :D
But yeah, I hear what you're saying, about tv vs book. I"m having trouble with House and Blades of Glory, because really, the people should look like who they are, instead of my interpretation of them, but that makes it haaaaard. /whine
