Newest bead creation.
This seriously looks a hundred times better in rl, but I took a ton of pics of it and they all look like crap. Much more photographic in rl. Anyhoo, I'm really happy with it. My brain is still churning around the thought of making something WAY bigger ....

And a better picture of Snape from last week.

Thanks for lookin'!

Seriously, I have never seen any bead creations like these before, they are so well done! You're a very multi-talented artist. The colors on the new one look good, but I can imagine finding flesh colored beads is a little on the tricky side. Are these those mega tiny glass beads that I'm thinking of, like the traditional tiny ones you see in some Indian art and clothing or are you using a thicker or plastic bead?

I feel so uncrafty. I painted our Halloween pumpkin, and felt like it was a chore. I think all muse has gone from my ability to paint.

These are plastic 'seed' beads. There was a pretty big learning curve about finding enough similar coloured/shaped/opacity beads. I ended up going to a place WAY the hell out nowhere in the shittiest part of town, but she has a shit-ton of beads in so many different colours. Skin tones are few and far between though, so yeah, it was still a challenge.

Thanks! They both look pretty cool, but the colours on the Trek one make it very photo realistic. Even my hubby was impressed. (and that's saying something.)

Actually, he wa probably impressed that they weren't rubbing their junk against each other. :)

So when do we get the chance to bid on Snape? ;)

:D I DON'T KNOW! I'm honestly not sure what to ask for them.

Any thoughts? They are between 9-12 hours of beading. The actual supplies are terribly expensive, but they are certainly time intensive!

So, I Googled bead loom and found a beginners video...WOW! The detailed intricacy! At the end she had made a little bracelet that spelled CANADA. LOL It boggles the mind to think of how much work is in your Art, with the counting and needlework. Do you have a pattern? GUH! Your bead work is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you! At first, I was taking a photograph (of my own art, mostly) and using photoshop to pixellate it, then just by eye, picking the colours and counting the steps.

For these larger projects I broke down and purchased a cross stitch pattern maker, so I can put a photo in there and it breaks it down for me. The pre-image still needs a lot of tweaking before it works properly, and the post image needs tweaking too, but it counts the rows and columns and uses symbols instead of colours, so it's a bit easier (if still confusing) to follow.

Also, the braclet looms have around 20-30 strings for the beads, my new loom holds 97! :D

When I get my own apartment again (which will apparently be a lot sooner than I had planned) and have money again (which won't be for years) I am going to kidnap you and make you live in my apartment and do nothing but draw me slashy art and make slashy bead-work for my walls. I shall, however, feed you cookies and give you back-rubs for your hard work in making my life nothing but slashy ecstasy.

That is all.

Offer me front-rubs, and we'll talk. ;)

The problem's just in the nature of the computer screen and of the medium itself. On a screen, it looks enough like pixels that your mind sees an EXTREMELY pixelated image, where in real life you see the beads for what they are. A way to improve it would be to give it context, lay it out on the desk of in your hands and let us see your fingers. No guarantees there. But his is basically an optical illusion. when something looks "like that" on a computer screen it USUALLY means horrible resolution, the brain's filling in the gaps incorrectly

Science asside, I LOVE these. They're fantastic. You've done a GREAT job with the likeness and the monochrome. I'm TERRIBLE at monochrome usually XP

Is this a response to a deleted comment? Why are you dissing on pixelation? Similar techniques are used in 4-color printing. In fact, your eye/brain is doing the same thing, just at an amazingly higher resolution. No image has perfect fidelity, nature of the universe, and digital images have the highest information loss, hence the need for enormous bit storing and transmitting infrastructure to support images with a high degree of verisimilitude. (Not to mention the compression algos and even MORE information loss.)

Pixelation or images made up from an amalgamation of other images is a common technique in 20th century art. It is also the technique used for post-it window displays and wall art (google that some time--it's cool).

Techniques such as mosaic (which originated in antiquity) and pointillism (19th cent) also bear some similarities.

I googled around and found several images of Lincoln head portrait mosaics done in pennies. There are also many portraits of US presidents created digitally from a grid of photographs. I think there are some famous ones from the 80's (now they are trivial to do) but I couldn't find them quickly on Google.

Thank you! A few years ago I caught a short glimpse of a black and white image done in beads (on someone's purse) and my mind had been churning it around ever since.

I tried the perler beads (the melty iron ones) but they were too big and clunky. Tiny seed beads give more wiggle room for artsy stuff.

sweet. how long did these take you to do? i know an artist who does all beadwork and it can take her months to do just one small piece.

From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Thanks! Snape probably took around 14 hours, and Kirk and Spock a bit less, maybe 9ish? There's less detail and more chunks of black on them, so that made it quicker. Plus I'm getting a bit better at not making mistakes, so that speeds things up too. ;D
