I think my ink is improving, but my digital finesse is ... finesse-less. This time I tried using gradients instead of flat colours. (more visible in the non halftone version) but ...Yeah, how people actually make beautiful art on the computer is beyond me.

Maybe I can find a local digital artist who can sit me down and teach this old lady 'bout computers.

Thank you! I'm still getting to the place where i can love my art. At least, the digital stuff. I guess, when you have ONE thing in your head, and an entirely different thing shows up on paper, it's frustrating.

thank you though!

are you using up/down or left/right gradients within entire sections only?
I haven't worked with adobe illustrator in a long time, and i don't know what you're using, but when i did, there was a way to add a highlight or gradient along a vector - it was a pain in the arse, in that it looked like when you want to draw a curved line, and you have to futz with the vector points to swing the line out into the desired curve? But, you could place them anywhere you wanted - so you could add a highlight/shadow within, say, their shoulders, and not have to fill the entire section with gradient.
that's probably not helpful to you at all.

Huh. I'm using photoshop, but I wouldn't be surprised to know there's vector gradients there too.

BUT THAT WOULD TAKE WORK! ;)

I've had a lot of artists reccomend using Paint (the program, not an actual bucket of paint) but the thought of re-learing all the crap I've already learned is intimidating.

Yeah... At 16, I was convinced I was going to make animations for LIFE. Please note how absolutely ghetto those are. I used MS Paint and VideoWave3, which isn't even a program designed for that. I made about 40 videos total.

But as far as getting into anything... made in the last decade, no, I've not. I would think it would be a lot harder than just taking pen/pencil to paper or paint to a canvas. Do you use a drawing tablet? I guess I am a decade behind when it comes to art and technology.

I also think this is quite good. I especially admire it because it's a style I just cannot do. I absolutely love the half-tone.

Thanks! It's a style way out of my regular method, so it's hard on the brain! It's still not where I'd like it to be.

I don't know...I don't think you give yourself enough credit. It looks pretty amazing to me, hon. It looks quite a bit like the comic book art I see out there.

I wish I lived closer to you. I'd love to sit down and show you around the toolbox.

There are a lot of ways to colour in Photoshop (about as many as there are digital artists). One way is to keep your blacks (outlines) on one layer and then create a few layers for like-coloured shapes under it. You can then select and colour those shapes without affecting the whole illustration. Then you might want to create another layer above the rest for highlights, and another for shadows. Basically, it's all about fiddling with brushes and blending tools 'til you get what you want.

This illustration really good for someone who's new to colouring digitally - you should cut yourself some slack ;)

Thank you!

I do use layers (and all the ink is done by hand) but I'm just rarely happy with the results. I guess I just don't find digital art to be as intuitive as traditional. I've had way more luck with brand new mediums, yet continue to be very mediocre digitally.

Oh well, nothing that a TON more practice won't fix. ;)
