Paperquill Fail

Hee! I tried my hand at paper quilling and …. well, it's not a loss if I learned something, right? I am AMAZED at how frickin' time consuming it was! Took FOREVA! And sadly, looks cool and creepy, but nothing like I had planned.

It's supposed to be Robert Downey Jr, but it looks more like Chuck from Supernatural.

Things I learned:
I need paper that is more diversely coloured. The black and brown are too close to make it look good.
Red paper as a background = not good.
Moar practice. Lots moar.

I LOVE the letters done this way.

I don't think pointillism worked well for the eyes. The tight curled teardrop shapes might have been better for the eye whites and the iris as a quilled circle with a smaller darker circle inside, white glint- a tiny teardrop quill.

Teeth should have squared corners? *shrugs*

An art teacher had her students use the cores of toilet paper and paper towell rolls to do something like this. They cut the cores into different height tubes then flattened them into various oval and formed into other shapes. They were glued like in quilling and painted on the paper tubes and backgrounds. Some of them were gorgeous. All of them, that were finished, were interesting. Good recycle art.

Yeah … it's kind of nice when you have no where to go but up! :D

I still think it looks cool, but it just didn't get across what I was going for. Onwards and upwards!

Those paper towel arts sound neat!

The lettering came out great, and I reckon the blues would make an awesome sea scene. As a portrait - maybe not! I bet you could do other awesomeness with this technique though.

Oh, I WILL MAKE A GREAT PORTRAIT!!! … maybe … ;)

There is pretty much NO supplies available where I live. Like, seriously, I called every single art/craft supply place in my city and there was ONE little independent scrapbooking place that had one paper needle and about 8 colours of paper strips.

I cut many of my own strips for this, but it's heavier paper and not as long etc etc etc. I've ordered some online and will try again when it arrives.

Boy he looks creepy. LOL. I think the teeth that make it creepy. (Maybe you should send a picture of it to RDJ's page. He seems to love fanart.)

I got one of those 'activity-a-day' calendars way back. The one I picked was paper quilling. Each 'page' was only a few inches, but the time it took to quill, I don't see how one was supposed to do a page a day! I ended up falling behind. Seriously, it should have been quill a page a week or something.

Oh God, it is SO time consuming! it's like doodling in super slow motion!

I would NEVER send this to a celebrity. It almost looks like a threat! :D
