Well, technically, it was yesterday, but ..erm..the government decided that it should be today instead.

No. I'm not kidding.

Welcome to Canada!! *eyeroll*

On a nerve-wracking aside; I've been asked to sing the National Anthem at a AA baseball game in August. I have a pretty okay voice, but I haven't sung ANYTHING for about six years, and the Canadian National anthem is about as exciting as a bowl of All Bran. Seriously, it's not exactly the sort of song you'd choose for Star Search.

Plus, it's got to be accapella. NO BACKGROUND MUSIC! Just me and my vocal chords in front of I dunno...twenty thousand people? *flails*

Wow. Is there no limit to your talent? I'm impressed. Just don't try to jazz it up by grabbing your crotch like Roseanne Barr did with our anthem about 1,000 years ago. Is the song, Oh, Canada? If so, I think I almost fell asleep typing the words. What is it with national songs being either unbelievably difficult to sing or just kinda boring?

Good luck, hon! You'll do great! And if you don't, just do something classy like flash your boobs or something. ;D

Yup, that's the one! You think the whole 'crotch grabbing thing' is already over done? *sulks*

Well beavers are the national animal, so maybe I'll flash mine! ;^)

Uh...does any other country call them a beaver???

Well, I know we have beavers in the US...;D Who knows? Maybe you can bring that touch of class that's been missing back to crotch grabbing.

*sigh* Yes, it truly is a forgotten art! ;^)

Happy (belated?) Canada Day, and good luck with the singing! It's sounds very daunting, but I'm sure they wouldn't have asked you if they didn't think you were up to it. You're a pretty amazing woman ... such all round talent. Go you!

Well, 'they' didn't ask me, I was volunteered by some business associates. I still have to audition, but I *think* I'll do okay. It's the whole 'being alone' thing that freaks me out. I used to sing in a band, but I always had my bandmates (and alcohol) to bolster me!

Thanks for the well wishes!

Now, the nice thing about no backing is that you don't need to worry that some instrument behind you will be tuned slightly out of whack, and throw you off :).

I think it's compulsory that national anthems be completely dull. Ours is horrible - it's basically a prayer, and the vast majority of the country surveys as secular. Sigh. And the range of notes typically makes it tricky for the average person to sing - it always sounded terrible at end of year school things :).

Yes, nothing will be out of tune except me! :D

Where are you from, that you have a prayer type anthem? Ours mentions God and 'thy sons' but I think they toned it down a few years back to be less ... christian.

NZ. It's called "God Defend New Zealand" - the first few lines are:

"God of nations, at thy feet
In the bonds of love we meet
Hear our voices we entreat
God defend our free land"

And it goes on like that for five verses, alternating god and ego :).

Sounds nicer in Maori. Probably because I don't speak Maori :). But I think that version might translate to something a bit less overbearing, too.

Good luck with that. I could play flute in front of twenty thousand people (and have at marching competitions), but singing's totally different. I hope you do well!~Sophia

Thanks! I"ve played the drums in front of crowds at the bar, but never a stadium. (although I have sung for large groups, but with a band for back up.) And that was YEEEAAARRRSSS ago!

thanks for the well wishes!
