Do your dishes match?
Or your couches? Or all your pillows and sheets, for that matter?
I inherited a set of 'everydayware' from my mother when she bought herself a new one. I quite like them, mostly because I moved a lot as a child/teen and even though my surroundings changed, these dishes are something I remember as a steady thing I saw every day. They're Royal Daulton (sp?), but not fancy. Over the years, we've lost some bowls and the odd mug, due to clumsyness and mis-use, and I'm not sure if I should go on ebay to find another set to suppliment these, or just ... deal.
As for the rest of mylife dishes, we have a large mish-mash of mugs, some souveniers, some xmas presents, etc. We have a wide array of glasses, same deal and our cutlery drawer is overflowing with a hundered different sets too.
Sometimes I think I'd love my house to look like it belongs in a magazine, (not White Trash Weekly) but sometimes ... I dunno. The REST of my life isn't that organized, it would be a bit of a sham to have my house so detailed. :D
How about you? Is your bed all one colour? Or do you have a mix of different blankets and sheets like me?

Date: 2012-04-17 04:21 pm (UTC)This is a really interesting question. Personally, I don't have matching mugs, because I love that all of mine have come from certain places or were gifted from family members. Or I just bought because I liked them. One is the same cup my Nana uses (she has a huge set), and it reminds me of drinking tea with her at the cottage every time I use it. My dishes are loaners from my stepmum, and don't have any attachments.
My flatware, however. I have no idea why, but I searched high and low to find the same flatware that I had whilst living abroad. Maybe because they were happy times? Or I just liked that they weren't shiny? No clue, but I wasn't happy until I found a set that was close enough. This still isn't quite the same, and I think it bothers me sometimes.
And I have my Nana's aluminium fluted pie pan which you can't buy anymore! Damn new silicon pie thingies that spill the pie everywhere when you try to take it out the oven.
Who wants to live in a magazine? The people who can throw together mismatches to make them look great win the prize in my book. Anyone can buy a showroom.

And yes, my room is like I like it: A mix of all I like. Mostly it looks like the room of a big kid! :D
Nothing matches really... ;)

Date: 2012-04-17 04:41 pm (UTC)Nothing I have matches. I have hand-me-downs from everywhere, and like your consistent plates, I have my mom's old cookie jar that always had the treats in it. It's probably my favorite thing I own-- it's old, it's 70's colors and I love the turtle!

Date: 2012-04-17 04:59 pm (UTC)The bed my son slept in until last year was used by him, his sister, an aunt, an uncle, my husband, me, a different aunt...all the way back to his grandfather when he was a boy.
As much as I love how a catalog looks aesthetically I think it also lacks personality. It's sort of like only going for looks and not brains. :P My $.02.

Blue Raggedy Ann/Andy blanket
And in the winter a kitty blanket
So some of it sorta matches..

Date: 2012-04-17 06:20 pm (UTC)Sometimes you find sets, so I have like, eight Corel-ware cereal bowls (hard to break, easy to clean, stack nice and tight) and two or three of several other things.
None of my coffee mugs match; My teapot is alone, (though if I Saw a match, I might get it.)
My salt shaker does not match the pepper-mill
The boat came with a Set of silverware, so about half of That matches-- I have Matching chopsticks! (and some that do not) random pots, pans, cooking knives,
A set of bread- loaf-pans (3)
My Grandmother's cookie-jar
Most(but not all)of the top sheets match the bottom sheet, some of them have pillowcases that match. ...??matching blankets??(?they Do that??)

Date: 2012-04-17 11:15 pm (UTC)All that said, since it is a mish-mash I try to obtain "big" items in neutral colors. Our dishes are mostly black and white (b/c one is ALWAYS in style and virtually nothing from our inherited stuff can clash with it). Lots of wood, which I keep saying I'll someday refinish into a quasi-matching hue family.
I also get things a rainbow color quilt to make the rainbow color palette around the house *look* purposeful. "That rug really tied the room together, man."
The only things I've got that really bug me are the lamps I have (hello 1980s). I also really really look forward to the day I live somewhere that I am not renting and can paint the walls/change counter tops/etc. or at least know that I could change those things if I really wanted to put the funds towards it.

Date: 2012-04-17 11:16 pm (UTC)I'm in-between - I just got my own place, which meant buying anything I didn't have. As a result, I have matching silverware, and mostly-matching dishes, but I *did* have a few mixed up dishes and mug previously, which I've kept. I'm sure my stuff will grow more ecclectic with time, though I swing back and forth on what I actually would prefer.
Sometimes mis-matched dishes look nice together : )

Date: 2012-04-18 05:11 am (UTC)And yes, the sofas match. Mom had them made, & picked out the tapestry pattern she wanted on both. Otherwise, there's an eclectic vibe to the house (pieces from many countries bought over many, many years) but the colors all 'work' together.

Date: 2012-04-18 07:49 am (UTC)Cutlery-wise, until very recently we had a lot of inherited junk and not enough of anything to go round, but I found some nice stuff very cheap in a sale and bought enough for eight people (the most our table will seat) so that we can actually put on a show if we have to.
As far as bedding's concerned, none of it's in actual sets but I buy a limited range of colours (mostly blue and white) so that we can mix and match without it clashing too much. Not that any of it ever gets seen, because I have large hand-crocheted blankets over the top of everything.
I got rid of most of my glasses - inherited from various relatives - because we simply don't do a lot of drinking, alas, and they were taking up too much space. However I do have a nice set of heavy goblets which usually only put in an appearance at Christmas. I also made a big effort a couple of years ago and replaced all my saucepans one by one; we'd bought a new cooker (stove) and needed a different type, but the ones we had were in such poor condition I doubt they'd have lasted very much longer anyway.
In short, I'm at the stage where I'm replacing all the odds and sods we've lived with for years with stuff that actually matches which, as one of your commenters so rightly said, means that I'm old!

Date: 2012-04-18 07:43 pm (UTC)HOWEVER, moving in with my boyfriend as I am next week, all this is subject to change: he's got multicolored (different solid colors) but matching plates and mugs and bowls, but absolutely no flatware (except for a couple of giant spoons in his knife roll) and just a couple of highball glasses; I anticipate we'll get glasses at yard sales, and I think my sis is going to give us flatware as a housewarming present. And his bedware all kind of matches. Beyond that, I am SOOOO looking forward to tricking out our apartment with awesome nerdy stuff!

Why? Because they're cobalt-blue glass.

I generally BUY bedding that matches, but it ends up all over the place. My fitted sheet (king) is now on my younger son's bed (queen).
I found an OMGSOSOFT blanket at costco the other day, so now it's on my bed, along with a couple of others that I aquired for the same reasons over the years. :D
