Do your dishes match?
Or your couches? Or all your pillows and sheets, for that matter?

I inherited a set of 'everydayware' from my mother when she bought herself a new one. I quite like them, mostly because I moved a lot as a child/teen and even though my surroundings changed, these dishes are something I remember as a steady thing I saw every day. They're Royal Daulton (sp?), but not fancy. Over the years, we've lost some bowls and the odd mug, due to clumsyness and mis-use, and I'm not sure if I should go on ebay to find another set to suppliment these, or just ... deal.

As for the rest of my life dishes, we have a large mish-mash of mugs, some souveniers, some xmas presents, etc. We have a wide array of glasses, same deal and our cutlery drawer is overflowing with a hundered different sets too.

Sometimes I think I'd love my house to look like it belongs in a magazine, (not White Trash Weekly) but sometimes ... I dunno. The REST of my life isn't that organized, it would be a bit of a sham to have my house so detailed. :D

How about you? Is your bed all one colour? Or do you have a mix of different blankets and sheets like me?

I'm not stalking your LJ, it's just lunchtime here :P

This is a really interesting question. Personally, I don't have matching mugs, because I love that all of mine have come from certain places or were gifted from family members. Or I just bought because I liked them. One is the same cup my Nana uses (she has a huge set), and it reminds me of drinking tea with her at the cottage every time I use it. My dishes are loaners from my stepmum, and don't have any attachments.

My flatware, however. I have no idea why, but I searched high and low to find the same flatware that I had whilst living abroad. Maybe because they were happy times? Or I just liked that they weren't shiny? No clue, but I wasn't happy until I found a set that was close enough. This still isn't quite the same, and I think it bothers me sometimes.

And I have my Nana's aluminium fluted pie pan which you can't buy anymore! Damn new silicon pie thingies that spill the pie everywhere when you try to take it out the oven.

Who wants to live in a magazine? The people who can throw together mismatches to make them look great win the prize in my book. Anyone can buy a showroom.

I am totally cool with stalking! I'm kind of past the age where anyone bothers to stalk me anymore. ;)

Put your silicone pie thing on a cookie sheet, to keep it steady.

Yes, but...that defeats the purpose. And then you need something to serve it on, and pull it out the fridge with for pie for breakfast the next day. :P I'll stick with the (freezing cold out the fridge) aluminium pans, I've yet to drop one of those.

This 's my bed:

And yes, my room is like I like it: A mix of all I like. Mostly it looks like the room of a big kid! :D
Nothing matches really... ;)

Hilariously, we were just discussing this very thing about an hour ago at our lunch table.

Nothing I have matches. I have hand-me-downs from everywhere, and like your consistent plates, I have my mom's old cookie jar that always had the treats in it. It's probably my favorite thing I own-- it's old, it's 70's colors and I love the turtle!

We have a huge miss-mash of stuff. Furniture bought one piece at a time from antique stores, Salvation Army, and IKEA. We do have one set of *nice* china that we use for holidays but mostly we're not that formal. All our coffee mugs are different.

The bed my son slept in until last year was used by him, his sister, an aunt, an uncle, my husband, me, a different aunt...all the way back to his grandfather when he was a boy.

As much as I love how a catalog looks aesthetically I think it also lacks personality. It's sort of like only going for looks and not brains. :P My $.02.

So, it makes me wonder, did our parents not get any hand-me-downs? Or did they toss the old stuff when they got new stuff? I don't really recall anything that was given to them from the grandparents, aside from complete sets of fancy china.

HOW THE HELL DID THEY DO IT?

XD My bed is as follows:

Blue sheet
Sexy man sheet
Red blanket
Blue Raggedy Ann/Andy blanket
And in the winter a kitty blanket

So some of it sorta matches..

Dude, Raggedy Ann is NOT conducive to sex. At All.

Sexy man sheet however ......

I get most of my stuff at yard-sales..
Sometimes you find sets, so I have like, eight Corel-ware cereal bowls (hard to break, easy to clean, stack nice and tight) and two or three of several other things.

None of my coffee mugs match; My teapot is alone, (though if I Saw a match, I might get it.)
My salt shaker does not match the pepper-mill

The boat came with a Set of silverware, so about half of That matches-- I have Matching chopsticks! (and some that do not) random pots, pans, cooking knives,
A set of bread- loaf-pans (3)
My Grandmother's cookie-jar

Most(but not all)of the top sheets match the bottom sheet, some of them have pillowcases that match. ...??matching blankets??(?they Do that??)

Matching chop sticks! Cool!

I love eating with chopsticks, but never cook anything at home that requires them, so they're always restaurant ware for me!

I generally BUY bedding that matches, but it ends up all over the place. My fitted sheet (king) is now on my younger son's bed (queen).

I found an OMGSOSOFT blanket at costco the other day, so now it's on my bed, along with a couple of others that I aquired for the same reasons over the years. :D

Sheets don't either, or towels.

:D I always buy white towels, so the always sort of match, even though they don't really.

We make an effort to have things tie in together, but I rather like a little controlled chaos. It's more 'me.' I have lots of things, knickknacks, do-dads, and such, but I like that. Magazine houses don't look lived in, warm, or inviting to me. There's something sweet and endearing about mismatched crazy towels or bed sheets. A well used plastic souvenir cup from 7/11 or a random cutlery drawer where you totally have your top 3 favorite spoons. As long as your home is clean and you can still have habitable rooms with the clutter, then who cares?

This might also go back to the 'emotional attachments to useless crap' problem I have...

I don't have much for doo-dads, aside from some fandom collectables and kid's play-doh creations that I've kept.

Hee! I totally have fav spoons and forks! :D

Haha, I'm a strange combo of the two. I started an art collection in college by trading prints and stuff, so I knew before starting to collect things for living on my own that I'd have a riot of colors/styles on my walls. Also, since I am still fresh to the "real world" most of my furniture is casts offs from my family, the in-laws, or finds at the thrift store or clearance rack.

All that said, since it is a mish-mash I try to obtain "big" items in neutral colors. Our dishes are mostly black and white (b/c one is ALWAYS in style and virtually nothing from our inherited stuff can clash with it). Lots of wood, which I keep saying I'll someday refinish into a quasi-matching hue family.

I also get things a rainbow color quilt to make the rainbow color palette around the house *look* purposeful. "That rug really tied the room together, man."

The only things I've got that really bug me are the lamps I have (hello 1980s). I also really really look forward to the day I live somewhere that I am not renting and can paint the walls/change counter tops/etc. or at least know that I could change those things if I really wanted to put the funds towards it.

I am a bit of a lamp whore! Not typical table top reading lamps, but lovely, low light decorative types. Little stained glass elephants, a wicker lotus, a frosted glass cube.

I'm like a moth, drawn to the ... oh wait, that's EXACTLY what I am! :D

I know what you mean about a 'constant' item from your childhood, despite moving. We had one that I was going to take when I moved out... but my mom accidentally donated it to goodwill.
I'm in-between - I just got my own place, which meant buying anything I didn't have. As a result, I have matching silverware, and mostly-matching dishes, but I *did* have a few mixed up dishes and mug previously, which I've kept. I'm sure my stuff will grow more ecclectic with time, though I swing back and forth on what I actually would prefer.

Sometimes mis-matched dishes look nice together : )

From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
My dishes aren't mis-matched enough to be eclectic. Just ... missing bits here and there.

that's too bad about your mom getting rid of your special item. What was it?

From: [identity profile] synn.livejournal.com
It was a needlepoint my mom completed years earlier- very 70's decor colors, with an avocado green linen background, and dandelions (flowers and puffs) stitched on it. There are other things we had that traveled with us over the years - that one had just been one I was particularly attached to. It was disappointing, but I suppose I'll live : )

HAH! As if. I do not believe you know what old is. It is certainly not you with your wacky Doolittle life and crazy outlook with pr0n cartoon characters. Therefore, you have no matching things. Keep it that way.

Well, I guess I'm old. All our dishes match! Some are also a 'constant' from my childhood. Mom always collected sets of good china. There are only four sets left now (you know how stuff gets broken over years & years of use). Our daily china is Royal Doulton, just like yours!
And yes, the sofas match. Mom had them made, & picked out the tapestry pattern she wanted on both. Otherwise, there's an eclectic vibe to the house (pieces from many countries bought over many, many years) but the colors all 'work' together.

Hee! which daily set do you have? Mine is called ... Wild Cherry, which sounds brighter and more exciting than it is.

I have Blooms. The Wild Cherry pattern is very pretty too. I expected to see a hint of pink or red, but the neutral tones work for me.

Hybrid of the two, really; I have a set of 'best' plates etc. for big family occasions, and they all match, but I have other more random stuff for everyday use. I also have, packed away safely in the loft, my mother's 'wedding china', which is very delicate and which I can't imagine ever using for fear of breaking it.

Cutlery-wise, until very recently we had a lot of inherited junk and not enough of anything to go round, but I found some nice stuff very cheap in a sale and bought enough for eight people (the most our table will seat) so that we can actually put on a show if we have to.

As far as bedding's concerned, none of it's in actual sets but I buy a limited range of colours (mostly blue and white) so that we can mix and match without it clashing too much. Not that any of it ever gets seen, because I have large hand-crocheted blankets over the top of everything.

I got rid of most of my glasses - inherited from various relatives - because we simply don't do a lot of drinking, alas, and they were taking up too much space. However I do have a nice set of heavy goblets which usually only put in an appearance at Christmas. I also made a big effort a couple of years ago and replaced all my saucepans one by one; we'd bought a new cooker (stove) and needed a different type, but the ones we had were in such poor condition I doubt they'd have lasted very much longer anyway.

In short, I'm at the stage where I'm replacing all the odds and sods we've lived with for years with stuff that actually matches which, as one of your commenters so rightly said, means that I'm old!

From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
I turned down my mom's good china, as I know I will NEVER use it. Ever.

I did score some really beautiful delicate glasses for ...wine?

I will probably never use them either, as I only drink wine once per year, and already have a set of glasses for that. *shrug*

Our bowls & plates were inherited from my grandma (those ubiquitous white with gold flowers ones that EVERYONE has) but since we are in a near-constant state of breaking glasses, everything we've got is from yard sales. So we don't really have more than 2 of any kind of glasses. Mugs have all been aquired as gifts or prizes (#1 Grandpa! Yale Speech and Debate Tournament! endless mugs with my niece's pictures on them!). Flatware all matches but I keep throwing out spoons by accident so we're down to like 4 teaspoons. I buy my bedding in sets.

HOWEVER, moving in with my boyfriend as I am next week, all this is subject to change: he's got multicolored (different solid colors) but matching plates and mugs and bowls, but absolutely no flatware (except for a couple of giant spoons in his knife roll) and just a couple of highball glasses; I anticipate we'll get glasses at yard sales, and I think my sis is going to give us flatware as a housewarming present. And his bedware all kind of matches. Beyond that, I am SOOOO looking forward to tricking out our apartment with awesome nerdy stuff!

Date: 2012-04-20 05:08 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
ha! We ran out of knives a few years back, and belatedly realized that we had been throwing them out with the pizza boxes! (leaving the knife in there after cutting up the slices.)

When my mom remarried, her new hubby gave us his flat ware, but oddly enough, we're down to only about 4 teaspoons. WTF? They're like socks!

I don;t really have my won dishware, since we're living with my hubby's family, but... last week I found three small bowls at a yard sale.

I was hoping to get four but I couldn't find another one. I bought the three anyway.

Why? Because they're cobalt-blue glass.

Date: 2012-04-20 05:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tripperfunster.livejournal.com
Ooh, the cobalt glass is pretty! My mom's every day set has some nice cups and bowls in that blue.
