Art vs. Reference

I posted this somewhere else, in response to a huge Wankfest that I don't even want to get into again (no, it wasn't about me) but it was about artists using/copying references. I use references, but I don't trace them, but occasionally, I draw closely enough to get results like this.

This is sort of a post about nothing, but I kind of think the drawings look cool when matched up/placed over the original reference.








In case I'm not being clear, this is my art interspersed with the original reference photos. Shit, if nothing else, it makes me realize I need to use WAY more reds when doing skin tones! :D

ETA: In the 'kissing House' one, he's kissing Stacy in the original, and I stuck Wilson in there, so I put that one at a lower opacity so you could see the two(three) of them there.

This *is* the art, hon! I've taken my art and placed it over the reference pics, then erased some of each, so they bleed over each other.

The 'original' House kissing Stacy pic (the second last from the bottom) is placed under my drawing of Wilson kissing House, then I used a low opacity, so you can see them both. Makey sensey now?

Oh God, it was WANKFEST /07! The wank to end all wanks! You probably missed it because it was House/Wilson arts. Three 'supposid' friends of an artist (a wonderful, talented and very generous person) totally cut her legs out from under her, accused her of tracing her art and even of using subversive photoshop kungfoo intead of actually drawing stuff.

Then then, they placed her art over/under screencap reference photos to PROVE their theory. Honestly, you would have thought that she'd been killing hookers and feeding them to her pigs. If people would spend a little more time making the world a better place, instead of putting all of their calories into being asshats, the world would be a much better place.

Long story short, fandom errupted, slammed the stoopid 'friends' for their asshattedness and in defense of the artist, I posted these pics, proving, once and for all that OH MY GAWD, THEY MUST BE RIGHT, BECAUSE MY SHIT FITS INTO THE REFERENCE PHOTOS TOO!

Then, later, I wuz like...hey, these look kewl like this! :D

Anyway, my GOD. I can't believe these 'friends' of hers, that is unspeakably terrible and what a betrayal. GYAH.

Also - COME ON. It's drawn fanart for a tv fandom. Like, TV fandomers should be grateful for what little the get, dammit!!

Sheesh, going back to your rant about fanarts, EVERYONE should be grateful that people are willing - nay - joyous to draw people/pairings that they like.

As to the hump_day_smut hosting, we actually have enough people now, but it was just volunteering to be in charge of a week's prompt, and be the one to gather the artz and then make a post with them. It would only be every four to six weeks, so its not a huge time committment. If you're still interested, I'm sure we'll be adding more 'hosts' in a few weeks. Cnary and I are both not mod-bots by nature, so we're taking it slow! :D

I don't understand this "anti-references" bullcrap . . . Does that mean if you use one of those wooden models as a reference your resulting art isn't original? What about live models? And what about me using Sims??? Plenty of professional artists use picture/photograph references as well. I don't see anything wrong with it. For anatomy and faces you need references . . . esp. if it's something at a weird angle. X^D But I do both so maybe I should shut up. X^DDD
