If you read my journal (and if you're reading this, then you DO,) you know that I'm pretty much a black and white girl. Other than the odd cartoon, I mostly work with graphite. I have a phobia of colour, and although I love it in other peoples work, I hate it in my own.

Until ... the frighteningly talented [livejournal.com profile] elicia8 posted this FANTASTIC crayon tutorial that she did, step by step of House. http://elicia8.livejournal.com/94624.html

Now, mine isn't nearly as nice as hers, but I'm just thrilled to pieces with it. *huggles it*. I used THE shittiest crayons known to man (the ones in those $20 art kits that you buy for kids, that have like, 3000 pens, pencils, crayons, watercolour pads and markers) so the quality wasn't the best, but I feel like something clicked in my brain, and I may just have to go out and purchase some COLOURFUL utensils tomorrow! *SQUEE*

He's a bit more yellow than I intended (especially since I didn't use yellow at all.)
Anyhoo, without further ado, here's my crayon House pic

Thanks! Mine took an hour (I actually timed myself for a change), but I was also switching back and forth between my reference pic and the tutorial.

I can hardly wait to try more!

*whispers in your ear*: a good set of color pencils, a good set of color pencils, and, if you should need to redo things, there's always photo software (;

nice work! i'm a bit color-phobic myself, but i solved that by going into an art field in which i'd have no control over the final color even if i tried.

Hee! I like your icon! <3

Do coloured pencils blend? I tend to draw very large, (14x17) and usually close-ups and coloured pencils can be very tedious to colour in large areas. (I think)

I was considering pastels, but they're so greasy, and if the kids got ahold of them... *shudders at the though*

Any brand of pencils you'd recc?

thank you!

i've liked prismacolor or caran d'ache. i hear faber-castell is good too. there's also pastel- pencils or soft color pencils if you'd like to experiment around a bit. colored pencils blend very well, but differently from pastels. i'm no expert, but, with pastels, you can really moosh them around whereas, with pencils, the blending is all in shading, which, i think, gives you more room to screw around with color saturation- that is not quite so straightforward with pastels.

i'd say, get some small packs of varying hardness and experiment.

Get Prang brand! They're cheaper than Crayola's, have more colors, are better for the environment (made from soybeans), color smoother, AND are completely safe to eat without negative repurcussions. My dog ate my 96 box and pooped pretty colors for a couple days, but she was fine. :D

*stops plugging*

Oh, and DUH! Omg, so pretty! I'm always a fan of your House art, though! Well, all your art, but... mmmmmm, Hugh Laurie. <3333

do you have stock in the company? ;^)

I'm the same way when I find something I like! I haven't heard of the name, but I also haven't looked for crayons before. Would they be at an art supply store? Or more like and Office Depot type store?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Staples and Office Max carry them out here. I don't know if we even have Office Depots. I always used to get mine at Toys-R-Us. >.> Hahahaha. It depends what are supply store you go to. Hmmm. I don't know, I think they usually sell them wherever they sell Crayolas. They're in a black box with a panda on the front. :)

You do crayon good, maybe the roughness of it lets you have more control over the subtle areas.

I was surprised at how well it worked! I think they're transluscence helps, although,, they don't layer well. More than two layers and it just gets gummy. I'll definitely have to try again!

Thanks! The line art was a bit off (I was so excited to get to the crayon part that i rushed it a bit) and, of course, you can't ERASE crayon! :D but I'm quite happy with how it turned out, and the speed of it was fun. Graphite takes quite a long time, and sometimes it gets boring/tiring/frustrating to have to take so long to get a finished product.

I think I'll have some fun with crayon in the future!

Wow, this is great! It really looks like House. You've followed the tutorial very well... we could all learn something from it. I love his ears.

You asked if colored pencils could blend well. They can if you slowly build them up over layers- they can produce some amazingly deep colors. They also have blending markers you can use that help out (or just use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol) with evening out tones and such. My favorite color pencil brand is prismacolor, but they can be pretty expensive. Maybe try the brand that was mentioned above, and if they work well and you like colored pencils, upgrade later to artsy-fartsy colored pencils. lol

Oops, nvm. No one mentioned a brand of pencils. lol She was talking about crayons.

I bought the recommended crayon brand, and I also 'splurged' on a cheap set of chalk pastels. I'm going to get busy, right away! I'm going to wait on the coloured pencils right now. The sets are quite a bit more expensive, and I already have some watercolour pencils that can also be used dry.

thanks for the blending advice, I'm looking forward to seeing what I can come up with. And the pastels....they just beg to be on dark paper. I might have to get some of that too!

Oh, I love chalk pastels. Haven't worked with them in ages! I love the light colors of them on dark paper. You are too right. I'm excited to see what other cool stuff you'll do with crayons.

That's looking really good - do more of those!! Are they waxy crayons? Or pastely type ones? Whichever it was, it turned out really well, but gawd, waxy crayons are hard to use! I'm impressed :)

They were the shittiest, waxiest ones! (the only ones I could find at the time).

today I bought some chalk pastels, and also some nicer crayons that kittehkat recommended. The whole point of the excercise is to do something fairly quickly, and crayons cover a large space with minimal work. it's actually quite freeing to do something fast, and still have something to show at the end.

Graphite can be so detailed and fiddly sometimes, that it gets a bit tedious. I think crayons will be a welcome distraction, and hopefully teach me lots about colour in the meantime!
